Did Derek Ramsay and Angelica Panganiban buy a house to ensure their commitment to each other?

In an interview with Derek Ramsay during the cast pictorial of Maruja, the actor said that he understood why there have been rumors saying that he and girlfriend Angelica Panganiban have already called it quits. “We’re good. Siguro lumalabas yung mga rumors na yun dahil nagka-clash yung schedules namin. She's got her taping, I have my taping, so we don’t get to see each other that much.” Apparently, it has been quite a while since they have taken a long vacation together. “Actually nung Christmas holidays bumawi kami kasi first time niya to spend Christmas with my family. So nag-Cagayan de Oro kami. But start of 2009, medyo hectic yung mga schedules namin, hindi kami nagkikita,” he revealed.

When ABS-CBN.com asked him about the status of their relationship, the dashing actor described how important Angelica is for him. “She's a part of my life. I can’t have a day where I don’t talk to her. Parang my day would be complete if I at least get to talk to her on the phone or better yet, get to see her. So yun, parang it’s at that level na it's not just a want but it’s also a need for me to see her and be with her,” he stressed.

He firmly denied, however, that they have already bought a joint property, which is rumored to be the real reason why they can’t break up despite constant misunderstandings. “Pareho kaming nagpapagawa ng bahay, pareho kaming kumakayod to build our houses, pero separate yun. We’re not there yet. Pero totoo, kumakayod siya at kumakayod ako to build our [respective] homes,” he reiterated.

Although they are both within marrying age, Derek revealed that they have never seriously discussed settling down with each other yet. “Yeah, we’ve talked about it because I am very close to my family and one day I’d like to have my own family and my own kids—lots of them actually. We’ve talked about it once or twice. Sometimes we joke about it, ‘O ano kaya magiging itsura ng kids natin?’ But nothing to the point that we’re planning something out and ironing it out na eto na yung gagawin natin,” he maintained.

Apparently, Derek prefers to have kids first before tying the knot, insisting that marriage is not a necessary step for him to prove his total commitment to a girl. “That's true, I’m not going to lie, I did say that. If my partner wants to get married, give and take ‘yan eh, I’ll do it for her. For me, to marry somebody doesn't prove that I love them more. The person who's going to have my child is the person that I want to spend the rest of my life with. Marriage or no marriage, my commitment is to that person and to the family that we're going to start,” he explained.

Knowing that unexpected separation happens even to the most committed of married couples has convinced him not to take the plunge that easily. “Marriage is supposed to be forever. But today, you have pre-nups, you have annulments, you have divorce, what’s the point? I’ve noticed na parang couples that get married kapag nagpakasal sila dun nagii-sprout yung mga problema. So parang it’s not a big deal for me. Pero if my partner wants to have that special day, I’d give that to her.”

Derek further admitted that it has taken Angelica quite some time before she has come to accept his non-traditional belief on marriage. “In the beginning she couldn’t understand that. And I think every woman wants that special day. But through the years she has actually realized [the wisdom behind it because] she's met some couples that have [separated]. She realizes na may point nga yung pinagsasabi ko. But I am not trying to change her views on marriage. I’m just sharing my views, at kapag gusto niya, we'll go,” he stated.
