Boy Abunda reveals why his friendship with Kris Aquino works
by Bernie Franco | November 05, 2009 11:19 AM |

For his 54th birthday this year, Boy Abunda received a promise of a Mediterranean cruise from his best friend Kris Aquino. Last year, Kris gave him boxes of signature personal care products that would last him for many years. “Just the other day, she went to Paul Smith (store) and she bought me sandals, shirts… She goes to the store and she buys me pairs of pants; she shops for me. She really is the little sister I never had,” Boy explained

Boy shared that the major common denominator that he and Kris have is their hunger for knowledge. “We are a match; she has very strong opinions, I have very strong opinions,” the host said. He admitted that even if they have opposite opinions on issues, they never allow these differences lead to misunderstandings. “She knows when to stop, I know when to stop. We debate. She thinks otherwise, I think this way and that’s life and that’s what life is all about. But I think we have a bigger love tan our disagreement. I listen, she listens.”

Contrary to the non-stop banter that they show in their programs, Boy shared that he and Kris can also be together and not talk for a long time and still have fun. “When we travel, give Kris a book, give me a book and we can be together and not talk for five days.”

The host explained that they both know each other so well that, “we can finish each other’s sentences. I think there is an intellectual and emotional respect for each other.” He also said that they are two people that are capable of handling themselves in a “complicated environment.”

Boy also shared that he and Kris do not scream at each other when they disagree on something. “I let her be, she lets me be. I do not impose who I am and what I think on her and neither does she do it on me. We can tell each other anything.”

Boy emphasized that even with their differences, they can still contribute to one another's growth, such as their opposing interests in books that allow them to share and exchange knowledge. But in spite of their differences, Boy said that, “underneath the complexities, it’s a genuine simplicity of feelings, which basically loving each other as friends.”
