Piolo Pascual is one of the A-list endorsers of Filipino clothing brand Bench. But in the upcoming fashion show Bench Uncut: A Bold Look at The Future to be held on July 2 at the Araneta Coliseum, Piolo won’t be walking the ramp. During the press conference for his teleserye Noah, he explained, “Hindi po ako kasali sa fashion show. Ever since naman po, hindi naman po ako sumasali dun.”
Bench holds a major fashion show every two years wherein most of its celebrity endorsers plus other models walk the ramp showing off the brand’s latest underwear collections and other apparels. There have been speculations that the reason Piolo doesn’t want to be a part of this show is that he refused to strip down to his briefs. “Marami naman sa kanila ang pwedeng gumawa nun, ha ha ha! Sapat na sa akin ‘yung exposure ko, ha ha ha!,” he laughed.
The actor-model elaborated that it’s only because of his religion that he doesn’t want to do underwear fashion shows. Piolo admitted that at this point in his career, he has a responsibility to his audience. “I guess, that's the Christian side of me that I don't want to turn people off just because you're in this business. I guess, it's the same as personal conviction. Hindi ko naman siguro kailangang i-prove kung ano ang meron ako, kung ano ang hitsura ko. I take off my shirt for the sake of endorsement purposes, but not to show off."
Nevertheless, Piolo still holds the distinction of being one of the sexiest men in local showbiz. His well-toned physique is the product of constant physical training not just in line for his action scenes in Noah, but also for the Ironman Triathlon he will be joining this August. “Constant ang training ko, even when I’m on the set. What’s good with Noah is that very physical ang demand ng character ko. So when I go to the set I bring my training equipment with me. I workout in between takes so kapag may eksena na ma-physical ready na ako.”
Piolo shared that after over a decade of being in the business, he is very much secure with himself, that he doesn’t feel the need to compete with whoever is the up-and-coming leading man. “Wala naman din po akong issue regarding exposure. Napakalaki naman po ng industriya natin para magkaroon din tayo ng oras para sa ibang tao. I'm happy with the successes of talents like Sam (Milby), John Llloyd (Cruz), Derek (Ramsay), Kim (Chiu)-Gerald (Anderson) because may mga bagay rin naman po na hindi ko nagagawa na kayang gawin ng iba. It’s important that instead of competing with someone else, you compete with yourself. You can never gauge your own success basing only on the success of others.”
Watch out for Piolo together with Zaijan Jaranilla in Noah premiering this July.
