Robin Padilla tells all about his life on and off screen in ‘Star Studio Plus: Idol’

In StarStudio Plus: Idol, the Robin Padilla Journey bookazine, showbiz’s bad boy Robin Padilla gladly shared his exploits from his teenage years and rise to stardom to his two-year imprisonment and the women in his life. He talks about his growing up years and how he used to dream of becoming a boxer, a Catholic priest, and a PMA cadet. His mom Eva Cariño was against all of his ambitions and pushed him towards show business instead. “Lahat na lang nggusto ko bawal,” said Robin who got depressed and rebelled against his mother’s strict rules.

A notorious bully in Baguio back then, Robin landed in jail for a week after getting involved in a serious crime with his Warriors fraternity. It was the last straw for Mommy Eva who decided to keep him out of trouble by entrusting him to film director/scriptwriter/talent manager Deo Fajardo Jr. in Quezon City. Looking back, Robin couldn’t help but laugh at his showbiz beginnings. “Ini-screen test ako. Sabi niya (Fajardo), ‘Hindi ka pwedeng artista.’ Nagulat ako. Hindi raw ako mestiso. Eh uso noon ang mga matinee idol.”

One thing most people didn’t know about him then was that he was a great break dancer who took part in several dance showdowns in Baguio. But because he was initially pegged as a kontrabida, Robin was told not to show this side of himself to the public. “Pinagbawalan po ako ni Dikong. Sinabi niya, ‘Kung gusto mong sumikat, ‘wag kang makisayaw.’ Kasi uso ang sayawan noon e. Lahat ng artista sumasayaw. ‘Ang ilalabas natin yung pagkagago mo.’”

But it wasn’t until ace lensman Jun de Leon noticed Robin’s star factor that the latter got his biggest break in showbiz. Jun was tasked to take pictures of budding actors and recommend who had “it” to Viva Films’ boss Vic de Leon. But he ended up submitting Robin’s photo alone instead. Boss Vic supposedly asked De Leon, “Bakit iyan? Ang baho-baho ng hitsura.” To which Jun replied, “Hindi tignan mo ang mga mata may stars.” The tell-all bookazine also mentioned that the only other star that Jun was said to have seen that way was Viva’s very own megastar Sharon Cuneta.

After that, Robin starred in the movies Hindi Pahuhuli Ng Buhay followed by Anak Ni Baby Ama which catapulted him to stardom five years after he entered the biz.
