After the Awards Night of Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 last September 14, 5th placer Van Roxas went home ahead of his fellow scholars. He was even a no-show at the PDA victory party last Tuesday, September 16. Stories were formed that the 18-year old singing heartthrob from Cebu was finally forbidden by his mother from ever pursuing showbiz. But at the grand press conference for the PDA 2 Top 6, Van clarified that all is fine now between him and his mother.
“Kararating ko lang po from Zamboanga. I’m so happy right now kasi nakapag-usap na kami ng mom ko at naintindihan na niya,” he said. When he was still inside the Academy, Van was already suspecting his mother might get mad at him once she finds out he went on with the PDA audition. Apparently, his mother wants him to prioritize his studies over his passion for singing. Two weeks before the finals, his Chicago-based mother sent a text message to the PDA management expressing her displeasure over his stay in the Academy and her intention of pulling him out from the competition once she comes home.
“Nagkita kami ng afternoon before the Awards Night. It was a very emotional moment. She was angry not because nagpasaway ako kundi dahil hindi ko sinabi. Natatakot kasi akong magsabi sa kanya noon. Ngayon sinabi niya sa akin na kung sinabi ko lang sa kanya papayag naman daw siya,” added Van. After the Awards Night, Van went with his mother to their hometown in Zamboanga for a serious talk. There he finally understood the reason behind his mother’s concern. “Pag-uwi sa Zamboanga nag-usap kami. Sa pag-uusap namin naramdaman ko na miss na miss lang niya talaga ako kaya ganun ‘yung reaction niya. Okay lang naman sa kanya na mag-showbiz ako. Natatakot lang siya na mawala ako. Madalang na nga lang kami magkita. She just wants the best for me kaya nga sobra ang pagtatrabaho niya sa Chicago. Hindi ko rin siya masisisi. Nirerespeto ko siya.”
Van said that he promised his mother that he will always keep and touch and he will never neglect his studies. He has two more years to go to finish his physical therapy course in college. But Van hopes to first take advantage of his victory in PDA to pursue his dreams of making it big in the music industry.
