Getting dolled up is a luxury I don’t often go for, but I always welcome the opportunity to sit in an artist’s chair, especially for special occasions.</p><div><br/></div><p>So, when <strong>MAC It is, in essence, a singing competition among the jilted wives of the philandering king, each one claiming her suffering is greater than that of her predecessor. The concept and staging are incredibly clever; one need not be familiar with the historical figures the characters are inspired by to enjoy the production, but the pay-off is incredible for history buffs. Because the creators were inspired by Beyonce’s concert, there is a stunning theatrical quality to the staging.<div><br/></div><p>Divorced. Beheaded. Died. Divorced. Beheaded. Survived. That’s the story of each queen in the briefest and most concise of summaries. </p><div><br/></div><p>Marlow and Moss used pop stars as composites—meaning a character that is based on more than one individuals—for the queens: Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson for Catherine of Aragon, Avril Lavigne and Lily Allen for Anne Boleyn, Adele, Sia, and Celine Dion for Jane Seymour, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna for Anna of Cleves, Britney Spears and Ariana Grande for Katherine Howard, and Alicia Keys and Emile Sande for Catherine Parr. By this alone, you can already picture the wide range of beauty looks used in the show. Catherine of Aragon’s look is elegant and gilded, befitting her queenly nature and status as the “original” wife. The infamous Anne Boleyn steals the show in striking shades of green, referencing the folk song “Greensleeves” and her promiscuity. Jane Seymour, who was supposedly the only one the king truly loved, is decked in lustrous silvers and somber grey—perhaps a nod to her short, sweet life. The “Instagram-unworthy” Anna of Cleves is the rock ’n roll glamazon of the sextet, bold and fiery in her reds and blacks. My personal favorite was Katherine Howard, she of the Stabilo highlighter pink Ariana-esque ponytail. The Lisa Frank color palette of bright pinks and purples gave her a sexy yet vulnerable energy. The sole survivor herself, the writer who lived to tell her tale and marry her true love, Catherine Parr, is the strong voice of reason in sapphire and sky blues. </p><div><br/></div><p>You too, can look every bit the part of a queen!
