MANILA -- Lung disease is one of the top 10 causes of mortality among Filipinos, according to the latest Philippine Statistics Authority data.

That's why pulmonologists have been pushing for more public awareness of how to take care of our lungs.

Lung illnesses like pneumonia, COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and tuberculosis affect thousands of Filipinos every year, but many remain unreported and untreated.

Pulmonologists are now working with the Department of Health (DOH) to detect 2.5 million tuberculosis cases this year, since early detection can make a big difference in the successful treatment of the patients.

To drum up support and awareness for healthy lungs, pulmonologists from various medical institutions and the Lung Center of the Philippines held the annual "Push Mo Lung, Galing Lungs" event at the Quezon City Memorial Circle on Sunday, also in celebration of National Lung Month.

They highlighted PUSH as an acronym for Prevention, Understanding the disease, Stop smoking and Healthy lifestyle as the best way to avoid lung disease.

Health practitioners who joined the event gave talks and demonstrations on how smoking and air pollution affect the lungs and gave free flu vaccines.

They also urged the public to stop smoking, contribute to the maintenance of air quality and practice coughing etiquette, as well as proper hygiene like frequent hand washing.
