In his most recent comment last month, he said declaring it would be &quot;<a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/news/12/29/16/duterte-says-declaring-martial-law-useless">useless</a>&quot; when a &quot;state of lawlessness&quot; would suffice.Former president Ferdinand Marcos placed the Philippines under martial law from 1972 to 1981 to suppress a growing leftist insurgency. During which, his government was accused of corruption and human rights abuses.Pulse Asia said it asked 1,200 respondents if they agreed with the statement: &quot;Candidly speaking, it may be necessary now to have martial law to solve the many crises of the nation.&quot;Seventy-four percent said they agree, 12 percent said they disagree while 14 percent said they might agree or disagree.Anti-martial sentiment was highest in Metro Manila (81 percent), followed by Mindanao (75 percent), Luzon (74 percent) and Visayas (65 percent).Visayas agreed the most to martial law (15 percent), followed by Luzon (13 percent), Mindanao (11 percent) and Metro Manila (7 percent).Across economic classes, disagreement was highest in the D (76 percent) and ABC (75 percent) classes. Agreement was highest in the E (14 percent) and D (12 percent) classes<div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2017/news/01/11/011117_fm.jpg"/></figure></div>The poll was conducted from Dec. 4 to 11, after the Supreme Court ruled that Marcos could be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes Cemetery)In August, Duterte <a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/news/08/09/16/duterte-to-sereno-would-you-rather-i-declare-martial-law">asked Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno</a> if she would rather have the president declare martial law after she opposed the President&#x27;s naming of judges allegedly involved in drugs.In October, Duterte said he was <a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/news/10/04/16/duterte-says-tempted-to-declare-martial-law">tempted to declare martial law</a> because of the illegal drug trade in the country.
