MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. remains firm on signing two landmark laws that define the Philippines&#x27; maritime entitlements and rights.China opposed the enactment of the Philippine Maritime Zones Law and Archipelagic Sea Lanes Law, even summoning Philippine ambassador to China Jaime Florcruz to protest the new maritime laws.“Well it&#x27;s not unexpected,” the president said on the sidelines of Seatrade Cruise Asia 2024 at The Cove, Okada Manila on Monday, November 11.He said the new legislation will fully define maritime boundaries to safeguard the country’s sovereign rights and sovereignty.“Marami tayong sinasabi that we have to protect sovereign rights and sovereignty. So, it serves the purpose that we define closely what those boundaries are,” Marcos Jr. explained.<div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/11/9/expert-ph-must-persevere-as-china-likely-to-escalate-in-response-to-new-domestic-laws-1327" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Expert: Philippines must persevere as China likely to escalate in response to new domestic laws</a></div>China has summoned the Philippine ambassador over the two new laws in the Philippines covering maritime zones and archipelago sea lanes, its foreign ministry said on Friday.&quot;The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Philippine ambassador to China to lodge solemn representations over the so-called &quot;Maritime Zones Law&quot; and &quot;Archipelago Sea Lanes Law&quot; issued by the Philippines.&quot; Beijing&#x27;s foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said.“China urges the Philippines to earnestly respect China&#x27;s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, immediately stop taking any unilateral actions that may lead to the expansion of disputes and complicate the situation, and earnestly maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea. China reserves the right to take necessary measures.” Mao added.China, which also has sovereignty disputes with the other countries in the region, has in the past enacted domestic laws covering the South China Sea, such as a coast guard law in 2021 that allows it to detain foreigners suspected of trespassing. - with a report from Reuters
