MANILA (UPDATE) — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Tuesday said commercial flights at the General Santos International Airport are expected to resume after one week, following a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that caused damage to key airport facilities.In an interview with DZMM, DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the runway remains in good condition, but the control tower and passenger terminal building (PTB) sustained heavy damage.&quot;Maliban dun sa nakita nating may mga bitak dun sa ating mga poste na pinadala satin basag din yung salamin sa tower. That&#x27;s very dangerous po kasi pag merong mga crack po &#x27;yan at malakas ang hangin, ang tendency po diyan ay baka mabasag po lalo at delikado &#x27;yung mga tao natin,&quot; Lopez said.&quot;Ngayon, in-assess natin,mukha namang kaya na maaayos within the day. Babalik na po &#x27;yung serbisyo ng tower natin,&quot; he added.Meanwhile, the passenger terminal requires further assessment.&quot;Tiningnan naman natin &#x27;yung PTB natin, &#x27;yun talaga malaki ang damage. So ang ginawa natin ngayon, we identified certain places po sa PTB natin we can do an operation. I&#x27;m just giving CAAP and mga tauhan natin dito ng one week para maayos nila &#x27;yung isang lugar dito para at least maipagpatuloy natin yung commercial operations dito sa General Santos City,&quot; Lopez said.Lopez said the terminal building has collapsed ceiling panels, cracked posts, shattered glass panels, and issues with electrical wiring.The agency said it will only be allowing military, humanitarian, government, and cargo flights at the airport.To assist affected passengers, the DOTr has coordinated with the LTFRB to deploy point-to-point bus services to and from Davao and General Santos City Airports with two to three hours travel time.Lopez added that engineers are already assessing the structural integrity of the facilities, and he has ordered stricter safety standards.&quot;From now on, nag-utos na tayo, &#x27;yung mga ganitong design dapat tempered glasses.
