With the recent opening of the 94th season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, reigning Most Valuable Player CJ Perez of the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) Pirates gets another chance to showcase his talents and contend for the championship.

This Thursday (July 12) on “Sports U,” the 6’2 wingman known as the “Baby Beast” will share his life story and motivations to succeed in basketball.

CJ, who never met his father, was raised by his grandparents in Pangasinan after his mother left to work abroad. In college, he instantly turned heads with his explosiveness on the court, garnering comparisons to basketball superstar Calvin “The Beast” Abueva.

After moving schools from San Sebastion College-Recoletos to Ateneo De Manila University, CJ reunited with his former coach Topex Robinson in LPU. There he did not just win the highest individual honor but also led his team in winning all their games in the elimination round.

They would, however, lose to a more experienced San Bed Red Lions squad in the NCAA Finals. Rather than be down, CJ used this as motivation to prepare and train harder and unleash his full potential this season.

Watch the rise of CJ Perez and other stories of triumph on “Sports U” with Dyan Castillejo this Thursday (July 12), 9:30 pm on DZMM TeleRadyo and after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN and ABS-CBN HD.
