Virtual event celebrates the talent and diversity of Daly City during Filipino American History Month

As cities continue to observe physical distancing and most events and celebrations have taken to the virtual stage, online celebrations have become an integral part of the new normal.

As in previous years, the City of Daly City continues its partnership with TFC to bring the city’s celebration of Filipino American History Month, not just within the confines of Fog City, but even beyond. Kasayahan sa Daly City will be on Saturday, October 10, 2020, and will be seen on Daly City Recreation’s Facebook page, on their YouTube channel and on the Kasayahan sa Daly City account on the Kumu app.

Building Partnerships

Global Corporate Affairs and Strategic CSR Head Nerissa Fernandez presented the idea of expanding the virtual space for Kasayahan sa Daly City by putting the event on Kumu, a powerful livestream platform that brings the voices of over 100 million Filipinos from all over the globe at the forefront.

Together with Product Lead for Kumu Karen Ann Cervantes and Content Lead for Kumu Tippy Benedito, Fernandez drove the partnership to fruition.

Daly City Senior Recreation Services Supervisor Romeo Benson says that aside from their long-standing relationship with TFC, they “are absolutely excited about the partnership with Kumu. This gives us the opportunity to try and learn something out of the box.”

According to Kumu Chief of Staff James Rumohr, “This event allows our users to feel connected to their family and friends back in the States.” Rumohr adds that “With over seven million users that downloaded the app in over 55 countries, Kumu provides a specific audience of users who love Pinoy (Filipino) culture.”

Homegrown Talents

Benson says that the line-up of performers features a great mix of talents from Daly City and the Bay Area: MelvinSings!, Jenn Clemena, and Native Elements all from Daly City and South San Francisco; Kariktan Dance Company and The Company, considered to be two of the best dance groups in California; and other guest performers.

One of the greatest DJs of all time, DJ Qbert will be performing a scratch set and there will be an exclusive look at the movie “Lumpia 2 with a Vengeance,”  which was filmed in Daly City.

Several other performances and demos will be featured, to be capped by the popular Filipina vocal group One Vo1ce, known for their hit “When you Think About Me” which reached Billboard’s Top 100 in 2000. The event will be hosted by Adobo Nation’s Tet Hernandez and JC Gonzalez.

Rumohr is looking forward to how the event will “educate the global audience of Kumu, as it will highlight the awesome community and important history that Daly City has for all Filipino Americans.”

The virtual event co-presented by the City of Daly City, TFC, and Kumu allows Filipinos around the world to connect in a safe, positive, and welcoming environment where users and viewers can watch and enjoy the festivities.

Benson is hopeful that Kasayahan sa Daly City will “bring many smiles to our Daly City residents and the many Filipino communities in the Bay Area, as well as those around the world.”

Be part of the festivities on October 10, Saturday, starting at 1:00 P.M. (Pacific) on Daly City Recreation’s Facebook page, on their YouTube channel and on Kasayahan sa Daly City account on the Kumu app.
