As aired on the premiere of ABS-CBN’s new afternoon talk show, 3-in-1 this February 10, hosts Karen Davila, Atty. Claire Castro and K Brosas talked about YouTube sensation Jam Sebastian of “Jamich” and his request to undergo euthanasia or mercy-killing to end his battle with cancer. He was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer early last year.

According to Karen, she talked to Jam’s mother, Maricar and visited Jam at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Bonifacio Global City last Sunday. Because of his illness, Jam would sometimes feel pain when touched but during Karen’s visit, she was able to touch him without feeling hurt. He temporarily stopped undergoing chemotherapy as he has to regain his strength first.

According to Jam, he talks to God, who would sometimes appear before him through symbols. “Kunyari pipikit ako, makakakita ako bigla ng Cross,” he said.

Jam’s asking for mercy-killing brought his mother to tears, “Sana mauna ako sa mga anak ko, kasi kung isa mawala, hindi ko kakayanin,” said Maricar, who is praying for a miracle.

K sympathized with Maricar’s situation. “Ang sakit bilang ina, ‘di ba, parang hilingin sa’yo ng anak mo na hindi ko na po kaya. Napaka-sakit.”

Meanwhile, Atty. Claire said, “As of now ah, wala pa tayong batas tungkol sa euthanasia,” adding that no one is allowed to administer the act. However, she said, “May pinopropose si Senator Miriam Defensor (Santiago) na magkaroon na. Ito yung tinatawag nating ‘Natural Death Act.’ Kumbaga sa ibang bansa, kung sa America may tinatawag na ‘Death with Dignity Act.’ Pero definitely ang qualified lang dito yung mga pasyenteng may terminal condition na.”

K, on the other hand, believes that Jam can still fight his illness based on his smiles on photos online, “Kung kaya mo Jam ngumiti, I think kaya mo pang lumaban.”

Karen gave a message to Jam on behalf of her co-hosts, “Mula sa 3-in-1, kay K, Claire and Karen, we love you, Jam. We’re praying, don’t give up… Hang in there. Ang Panginoon kasama mo ngayon.”
