Andi Eigenmann is among the many residents of Siargao who are disquieted by the growing trash problem in the island.

Recently, the actress – who has since turned her back on the city life by relocating to the province – took to her Instagram Stories to share the side of her home that many don’t get to see: heaps of trash piled in the island’s back roads due to the high influx of tourists.

The photo she uploaded came from Rafael Nogalo, a certified surfing instructor and resident of Siargao, who on Wednesday called attention to the poor waste management on the island by sharing a series of concerning images on Instagram.

“While tourists sip cocktails on Siargao’s picture perfect beaches, mountains of rubbish are piled in our back roads - poisoning the ground water and creating irreversible damage to our beloved island home. Is this the NO. 1 Island in Asia?,” he wrote.

“More tourists, more business, more trash,” he added.

Last year, the government of Surigao del Norte vowed to take action on the waste management system of Siargao to avoid facing the same fate as the famous Boracay Island.

Surigao del Norte First District Rep. Francisco Jose F. Matugas said that they would be setting up a P290-million centralized solid waste management system that was expected to finish within the year or early of 2019.

“We don’t want Siargao to become like Boracay, that’s why everybody in our island, especially local officials are closely coordinating its protection and preservation.” he said.
