Squid Game recently became the most watched Netflix series, gaining 111,000,000 viewers in less than a month.

In an interview with Good Morning America, director Hwang Dong-hyuk was asked about his thoughts on the global success that the series has achieved.

The director said that he thinks it is because the characters in the series represent the minorities not only in South Korea but also from around the world.

"[The characters] may seem very specific to Korea, but I think they constitute the minority in any country in the world," he said in the interview.

He also shared his experience filming the series amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Dong-hyuk shared that the first game in the series was the most challenging scene to film.

"It was the most difficult and scary thing to film. It was like seeing 456 characters all move according to choreography, like watching a K-Pop band because all these people had to move and stop in unison. Should I be sad? Should I be shocked? Is this beautiful? Is this funny? I wanted the audience to feel confused visually," he relayed.

Asked if the series will have a second season, the director admitted that the exhaustion that he experienced while filming the series made him initially hesitant to do a follow-up. But fans online have been giving him inspiration for the plotline of the sequel.

"Some of them are really brilliant. Maybe I'll go through all the YouTube again if I have to write the season 2 then I'll steal the ideas from the fans," he joked.

Squid Game tells the story of a group of people who join a survival game to win 45.6 billion won (approximately 1.95B PHP).

It stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Oh Yeong-su, Jung Ho-Yeon, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-ryoung, among others.
