Tonette Jadaone on working with Angelica Panganiban again: ‘Either zero or 100, ganun siya magmahal’

When she first started writing the script for her new WeTV Original series The Kangks Show, director Antoinette “Tonette” Jadaone admitted she really wrote the lead character with a specific actress in mind already.“Wala akong ibang choice for doc Kara kundi si Angge (Angelica Panganiban) lang. Si Angge, pag hindi niya tinanggap yung show change concept ako. Siya lang talaga yung naiisip ko na mag-pe-play ng doc Kara. Si Angge lang yung naisip ko. Nakatrabaho ko siya muna sa Beauty in a Bottle nung 2014 tapos hindi pa kami muna super close nun. Tapos after na lang ng That Thing Called Tadhana kami naging mas close. So seven years ago, ganun na siya katagal. So super happy ako na naka-work ko siya na matanda na kami na hindi love story. Kasi nga baka hindi niya tanggapin sayang yung casting ko ng iba (laughs). Nag-yes siya kagad ng hindi pa niya nakikita yung buong deck. Nung finally nakuha ko na si Angge saka ako nag-cast ng ibang mga characters and super happy ako na yung nakuha kong cast, habang ginagawa nila yung mga characters nila sa shoot, lalo akong napapamahal sa mga characters nila. From the lead roles to the supporting characters, happy ako na meron silang sariling ambag dun sa mga roles nila. Kumbaga alam mong inalagaan nila yung mga roles nila. Kahit yung mga letter senders, yung mga roles na binigay ko sa kanila may halikan, may sex, may ipapakita na ganyan at ganire. So natuwa naman ako na pagdating sa set wala namang nag-walkout (laughs). So wala akong nakikitang pagkakaiba. Siguro nagkakaiba lang dahil tumatanda siya, nagiging mas mature siya. Ngayon nagkakaroon siya ng mga alagang pusa, nag-yo-yoga siya. Pero in terms of kung paano siya magmahal, hindi yun depende sa tao. Parang ganun talaga siya. Yun yung default niya. It’s either zero or 100,” she said.Having written the sex positive show with the goal to not just entertain but also to widen people’s perspectives when it comes to taboos about the subject, direk Tonette said she hopes it reaches a wider audience. “Pag napanuod nila yung series, every episode may isang character na makaka-relate sila. Kumbaga yung character ni Maris ay isang very sex positive na Gen Z, so kung ikaw ay isang sex positive na Gen Z hindi mo iisipin na ikaw ang odd one out, may ibang parang ako na makikita ko sa show na ‘to,” she explained. The Kangks Show is available for streaming exclusively on WeTV with new episodes available every Friday.
