Parokya Ni Edgar’s lead vocalist Chito Miranda shared with his followers on social media how they came up with one of their hit songs, “Mang Jose.”

The Idol Philippines season 2 judge revealed that the song was actually meant for an online game and not for their album.

The song became an instant hit to OPM listeners and had been nominated for Best Novelty Recording and Song of the Year.

“Nagsimula ang lahat when Buwi was asked to come up with a song for Ragnarok (isang online game kung saan yata gumawa din ng kanta ang Kamikazee: Chicksilog) Buwi came up with the music and asked me to come with the lyrics,” he recalled.

The 46-year-old musician came up with the word Raimusen –– a mix of two Japanese words. Chito explained that he thought of the name as it was a perfect fit for an online game they were gonna sing for.

“So nung ginawa ko yung song, it was originally: ‘Raimusen! Raimusen! Ang superhero na pwedeng arkilahin. Raimusen, parang si Daimos din. Ngunit pagkatapos ay bigla kang sisingilin...Raimusen,’” he said.

While it was Chito who wanted to keep the song title for their band, it was lead guitarist Darius Semaña who pushed to change Raimusen to Mang Jose.

“Darius suggested we change his name to "Mang Jose" para daw mas Pinoy. Ayoko sana kasi pinag-isipan ko yung name...pero eventually, I was convinced. So reluctantly, I agreed,” he said.

The rest was history for the OPM rock band as it gave a new meaning to the name Mang Jose. Years later, Mang Jose would become part of Pinoy pop culture as it has its own comics, movie, and a restaurant all named after the hit song.
