Kids who grew up in the ‘80s are about to get a great dose of nostalgia as the classic video game Super Mario Bros. gets a movie adaptation. The game, which was first released in September 1985, became a worldwide phenomenon, selling over a million units within the first month of its release.

While the 1993 live adaptation movie was a critical and financial letdown, it did become a cult favorite for diehard fans of the game. The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer features a lot of elements from the game franchise, something that should make gamers’ hearts happy.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Minions: The Rise of Gru), the animated film is a collaboration between gaming giant Nintendo and animation studio Illumination, the latter of which created the Despicable Me and Minions movies. Universal Pictures, which also co-produces the film, will release The Super Mario Bros. Movie worldwide with a Philippine premiere set in April 2023.

Mario joins Princess Peach and Toad as they set off to save their world from Bowser and his henchmen. The movie features the voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
