Filipino-American singer Olivia Rodrigo expressed her appreciation for the Filipino community for supporting her on her journey as an artist.

"It’s amazing. I feel so proud to be a part of the Filipino community and they’ve been so lovely and so welcoming and supportive of me," Olivia said in an interview with Good Morning America.

Olivia has Filipino ancestry on her father's side.

In 2021, Olivia released her very first album Sour which was critically-acclaimed and a commercial success. Olivia considers turning her heartbreak into art through her album as something "empowering."

"I think it’s really empowering, actually. I remember listening to it after it came out and rolling out the window, blasting the song, and being like so proud of myself for doing it," she said.

While she is being compared to other artists, Olivia stressed that she wants her authentic self to shine through her work.

"I think sometimes you’re… especially a young woman in the industry, I think people are so quick to compare you to people and be like oh she’s the next this or she’s this mixed with this. I just kind of wanted to be me and be my own thing and write songs that resonate with who I am as a person," she said.

Olivia recently received seven Grammy nominations for her work on Sour.

Following her nominations in November 2021, she penned a heartfelt message on Instagram page.

She posted, "Woke up this morning to 7 Grammy nominations. When I was younger, my family lived a few blocks from the Staples Center, where the Grammys took place every year. I would always walk outside the arena and look at the plaques on the ground with all the winners’ names in wide-eyed wonder."

She continued, "I went to the Grammy museum so many of my free weekends [because] I was so fascinated by the history of the show and all of the incredible musicians that made it up. Many dreams have come true for me this year but this one is probably the most meaningful. Thank you to everyone who has believed in me and supported the songs I write. and thank you to @recordingacademy for the recognition. I’m beyond humbled. truly a day I will never forget. So grateful."

A documentary about her journey in creating the Sour album will be streaming on Disney Plus on March 25.

The Filipino-American singer was also named as Billboard's 2022 Woman of the Year recently.

In her speech upon receiving the award, Olivia highlighted the role of songwriting in her journey as an artist.

"Not a day goes by where I don’t think about how lucky I am to get to call this my job. I’ve been writing songs since I was so young, and it’s absolutely my favorite thing to do and [it’s] such an emotional outlet for me. What I love most about songwriting is its ability to perfectly capture how I feel better than anything I could have said in a conversation. Songwriting has always been everything to me, so for people to connect with my music is beyond a dream come true and thank you so much," she said.

She also expressed her gratitude to her fellow female songwriters for the support she received from them and for paving the way for the new generation of artists.

"It’s not always easy being a young woman in the music industry but I found so much strength from the female songwriters and artists who have come before me and paved the way and opened doors for so many young women like me. And that’s what’s so amazing about this event: every woman here today is working to break down those barriers and change the narrative and support each other and I’m so inspired by all the incredible women in this room. And I want to thank you all for your support. I am supporting all of you," she remarked.
