Director Mike De Leon’s 1976 film ‘Itim’ selected to be part of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival

<p>Voted as the best film of the 1970s by the Gawad Urian, Mike De Leon’s debut feature film Itim which he made in 1976 is now part of this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The film will be part of the Cannes Classics which is a special selection of best restored prints to encourage people to explore again the history of Cinema around the world. This event also marks the international premiere of Itim’s restored version released this year as it joins other classic films from different countries. </p><div><a href="https://push.abs-cbn.com/2021/10/27/fresh-scoops/daniel-padilla-charo-santos-film-to-compete-in-sin-196548" target="_blank"><u><strong>READ: Daniel Padilla-Charo Santos film to compete in Singapore film fest</strong></u></a></div><p>Itim is a story about a young photographer from Manila named Jun who decides to return to his native hometown to visit his father, a retired doctor who became paralyzed after a car accident. During his visit in the province, he decides to do a photo documentary on the Holy Week rites of the locals. He ends up meeting a mysterious woman named Teresa  (played by then newcomer Charo Santos in her first film role) who opens up to him about her recently deceased sister Rosa whom she believes is haunting her. </p><div><a href="https://push.abs-cbn.com/2021/12/17/fresh-scoops/daniel-padilla-on-working-with-charo-santos-nung-197496" target="_blank"><u><strong>READ: Daniel Padilla on working with Charo Santos: ‘Nung una I was intimidated’</strong></u></a></div><p>In an interview with ABS-CBN News, director Mike de Leon shared that he will not be able to attend the event in Europe and will be represented by his Itim co-screenwriter Gil Quinto instead. The film stars Tommy Abuel, Charo Santos, Mario Montenegro, Susan Valdez, Moody Diaz, Sarah Joaquin, and Mona Lisa. </p><div><a href="https://push.abs-cbn.com/2021/7/29/fresh-scoops/charo-santos-daniel-padillas-whether-the-weathe-194913" target="_blank"><u><strong>READ: Charo Santos, Daniel Padilla’s ‘Whether the Weather is Fine’ to screen at Toronto film fest</strong></u></a></div><p>The prestigious international film festival is set to hold its 75th edition from May 17 to May 28 in Cannes, France.</p><p>Also included in the Cannes Classics selection this year are films like The Mother and the Whore by Jean Eustache, The Last Waltz by Martin Scorsese, The Trial by Orson Welles, Sciuscia by Vittorio de Sica, and The Adversary by Satyajit Ray, as well as a new remastered version of the American musical Singin’ in the Rain to mark its 70th anniversary this year. </p>

Charo Santos’s first ever film project ‘Itim’ is part of a special section in this year’s Cannes Film Festival from May 17 to May 28.
