It was just so great because it helped me understand why we need more diversity in literature — people deserve to see themselves on the pages [of books]. And it was so sad because some of them were apologizing to me that they forgot how to speak Tagalog. And then, they were talking about how much they missed home and how much reading the book made them feel like they were home just even just for a while,&quot; she said.</p><p>&quot;It was also really great to be able to put forward a piece of the Philippines and into the wider world. I also hope that even just one Southeast Asian reader out there will read this book and be inspired to write a story of their own because we need more Southeast Asian voices in the picture,&quot; she remarked.</p>
