Currently playing the biggest role of his career as the iconic Padre Jose Burgos in the 2023 Metro Manila Film Festival Best Picture winner GomBurZa, actor Cedrick Juan talked to PUSH in an exclusive interview about how he first got into acting.

“Nagsimula ako sa teatro talaga. When I decided to pursue acting, I entered Dulaang UP sa UP Diliman. Nag-summer workshop ako dun dahil gusto ko mas mapalalim pa 'yung kaalaman ko sa pag-arte. And from 2013 to 2016, I was doing theater full time sa Dulaang UP,” he said.

The GomBurZa star admitted that audiences might not recognize him in his previous projects because he used to have long hair. In fact, he had already been part of the MMFF in 2016.

“Nagkaroon ako somehow ng significant na role nung 2016 na, 'yung Metro Manila Film Festival sa Die Beautiful as Erika and Oro as Bong. In Die Beautiful where I played the role of Erica, long hair pa ako nun tapos nag-drag kami nila Christian Bables, nila Paolo Ballesteros," he shared.

"Tapos Oro also where I played the role of Bong with Tita Irma Adlawan. And ang first na regular project ko sa TV ay Till I Met You. Ang role ko dun ay si Otap, kaibigan nila James Reid, JC Santos, and Nadine Lustre. Siguro kaya 'yung iba hindi na matandaan kasi for five years long hair kasi ako," he added.

He went on: "So nung itong 2022 lang ako nagpa-short hair. Tapos after that, gumagawa ulit ako ng theater and for five years kasi, nasa Idea First company ako so most of the films and projects of Idea First company nandun ako. So, Kalel 15 I was with Elijah Canlas."

Cedrick said he prayed to have a "significant" project that would create an impact.

"I think because of the pandemic lahat naman tayo naapektuhan, ang trabaho nawala so parang dalawang taon 'yun ng life natin. Tapos ito, nag-manifest lang talaga ako na, ‘Lord, I really want to do something really significant, na not just for myself but also that would affect our country,'" he said.

"Tapos pumasok ito, after ng five years na pahinga ko sa theater, biglang dumating yung Mula Sa Buwan. Tapos after nun, nagkaroon ako ng pagkakataon na mag-audition sa Gomburza and ito na tayo ngayon,” he added.

Last year, Cedrick was also one of the stars of the BL series Two and One. But he admitted he is open to doing a variety of roles.

“I think it’s part of an actor to play roles. But at the same time, we are at this day and age na parang may proper represtation na tayo, na parang gusto na natin na well represented ang bawat community. Oo I did some LGBT roles but somehow consented din naman siya and niri-research ko siya based on experiences ng mga taong nandoon," he said.

"Siguro as an actor, feeling ko isa 'yan sa pinakamasarap na parte ng pagiging aktor. 'Yung mga different walks of life, 'yung mga different communities, you’ll get to live it sa entirety ng shoot. So challenging siya, yes, but at the same tfulfilling siya kasi at least sa number of days ng life mo, meron kang magkakaibang buhay na isinasabuhay,” he added.

Proud of his film which earned him his first Best Actor award at the recently concluded MMFF Gabi ng Parangal, Cedrick said he hopes moviegoers will make the effort to catch GomBurZa on the big screen until January 7.

“Ito ay para sa Pilipino, para sa ating lahat na Pilipino. Sana ay panoorin niyo at manumbalik ang kagustuhan natin na manuod sa mga sinehan. Sana suportahan at panuorin niyo lahat ng pelikulang Pilipino," he said.

"At kung puwede, unahin niyo na ang Gomburza. Bakit? Totoo ito kahit i-check niyo siya sa history na nagsimula at identity nating mga Pilipino sa death ng Gomburza. Sana sa sampung pelikula na ito ay may maipili kayo na panuorin at sana huwag niyo kalimutan ang Gomburza,” he added.
