Jing Castañeda on TeleRadyo’s upcoming closure: ‘Lugi yung taong-bayan’

Veteran radio personality Jing Castañeda expressed her sentiments about the impending closure of ABS-CBN’s TeleRadyo on June 30 during an interview with PUSH.

She became candid about her emotions in the interview as she noted how unfortunate the closure was for her and the rest of the TeleRadyo team.

The broadcast journalist spent 15 years of her career working on various shows for TeleRadyo such as Kapamilya Konek, Turo-Turo, Pasada Sais-Trenta Sabado, Healthy Sabado, and Radyo Patrol Balita, among others.

More than feeling sad about the closure, Jing expressed how it will affect Filipinos as TeleRadyo has helped thousands of people during emergencies.

“With TeleRadyo’s closure syempre nakakalungkot, nakakapanghinayang, ang dami pang serbisyo na pwede pang gawin, andami pang bagay, tao na pwedeng tulungan. Sa ganito namang mga pagkakataon, ang lugi yung taong bayan kasi sila yung nangangailangan ng serbisyo,” she said.

Jing added how she thought the upcoming closure of TeleRadyo would be easier for her to accept as it had already been shut down back in 2020 when the Congress rejected the franchise renewal of ABS-CBN.

“Akala mo masasanay ka na, akala mo you’ll become numb since you’ve gone through it the first time pero hindi pala. Lalo na dahil ang gagaling ng mga tao eh. Hindi nila kasalanan na mawawalan sila ng trabaho,” she added.

Though it’s about to go off-air, Jing said that she’ll forever be grateful for the experience and training TeleRadyo has given to her throughout her career. She noted that because of the rigorous training they had to go through, she was able to become the journalist she is today.

“Yung training ng mga nasa radyo ibang level––24/7 kasi [yung trabaho] and it’s live, always live. Unlike syempre yung mga newscast or yung mga current affair shows na recorded––ito 24/7 as things happen, breaking news, etc.,” she said.

The broadcast journalist said that she has produced her own show, Pamilya Talk, because of the opportunity ABS-CBN gave her. Her show still has hints of her learnings from TeleRadyo as it focuses on advocacies such as family, health, and education.

“Bitbit na natin yun sa puso natin kahit saan man tayo makarating. Ang serbisyong publiko ay naroroon na at yung pagiging kapamilya ay sabi nga forever kapamilya––nakatatak na sa atin kung saan man tayo makarating,” she shared.
