Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, otherwise known as the EDM duo Sofi Tukker, has released a new single that pays homage to the country of Brazil and to the LGBTQ+ community.

“Jacaré” is a tribute to the South American country and its beauty. The pair debuted the song at Coachella and it has since been winning fans over.

Hopefully I never will because it's the type of music that lights up my entire being... and summer is coming soon! 💃🍹🏖️🐊,” one fan commented.

Sophie and Tucker explained how their new single came about. 

"Jacaré means alligator in Portuguese but it's also a derogatory word for women who like women. We wanted to take the word and flip it into something positive and joyful rather than a term used as an insult or threat. This song is super fun and sexy and inspired by our time in Brazil. We wrote the lyrics together with our longtime collaborator and friend, the Brazilian poet, Chacal. It's been a highlight in every DJ set we've done recently. It's a celebration of Brazil, of women and the LGBTQ+ community,” the duo stated.

Sophie, who is fluent in Portuguese, wrote the lyrics with the help of their friend Chacal. Her sultry vocals and Tucker’s beats give the song its mesmerizing vibe.

The video itself has started conversations online with some pointing out the LGBTQ+ theme.

The pair admitted, “It’s definitely the most fun video we've ever made. We have wanted to make a video for a long time based on the concept of us fighting for the same girl. It's just such an unusual and unique dynamic we have as a band. It's a silly and sexy story, played out in the most beautiful city in the world, Rio de Janeiro.”

Sofi Tukker will be busy performing at different events in the coming months, including Governors Ball, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Osheaga. They’ll also be performing sets at Lightning in a Bottle, Electric Forest Festival, Milwaukee Summerfest, and Capitol Hill Block Party. On the European festival circuit, they are scheduled to appear at Lollapalooza Stockholm, Down the Rabbit Hole, EXIT Festival, Pohoda, Rock Werchter, and Gunnersbury Park London with Kygo. On top of all these events, they still have their Las Vegas DJ residency which has been packing in the crowds.

Outside of their music, Sophie and Tucker remain passionate activists, helping raise awareness for organizations like Planned Parenthood, The Trevor Project, National Alliance on Mental Illness, Natural Resources Defense Council, The Nature Conservancy, March for Our Lives and Red Cross Ukraine.
