Piolo admitted rehearsing for months for his stage production was a whole different challenge for him.

“I lost my voice parang siguro nung first week of the show. So I had to do vocal rest for three days. I was just really emotional, the overflowing of emotions and finally I was able to pull it off. But it’s pretty emotional. After I just had to kneel down and thank the Lord for enabling me to be able to live the part and do what I had to do. And finally I can say I’m a theater actor,” he shared during the Mallari media launch held last June 19 at Novotel Cubao in Quezon City.

Despite his passion for performing on stage, the Mallari star said that cinema will always be his first love.

“I’ve been around for quite a while, theater for me was a new platform. It gave me so much discipline. It taught me to just really focus and just commit fully because it’s a live audience. With this film, I don’t know how I am going to be able to pull it off but I think that’s the magic of doing what we’re doing. You come out and surprise yourself. And when you commit yourself to doing a project, you lose yourself and I think  that’s the best part of doing what I’m doing and I get paid to do it,” he explained.

During the press launch, Piolo revealed way before he ever got the chance to portray a priest onscreen, he already co g ako para mas madali rin ang buhay?’ Sabi niya, ‘No,we need people like you in the business.’ So I had my two attempts to enter priesthood or to become a pastor but it never happens so I’m an artista,” he revealed.

Aside from agreeing to do his first ever horror film, Piolo said that he puts a lot of weight on the historical value in Mallari.

“We want to be able to have a voice to represent our culture and I’m privileged to have that voice especially for Mallari. Because this is an interesting film. So with all the thriller films, docu films from other countries, I’m proud to say that finally we have something that’s actually documented, that’s actually a true story.

“Though we’re fictionalizing it, we’re happy because of the production value and having that cinematic experience hopefully we can champion it into a bigger audience abroad. Philippine cinema, in as much as it’s struggling, we still can do films that are quality and that we can showcase to a bigger audience, a global audience,” he said.
