Sheryn Regis reveals what really happened 20 years ago

Sheryn Regis has been in the industry for two decades already and has definitely made her own mark as a singer. Last July 8, 2023, the Crystal Voice of Asia kicked off All Out, her 20th anniversary concert series, with a show at the Music Museum. Her special guest for the evening was none other than Prince of Pop Erik Santos, who was her competitor in Star In A Million way back in 2003.<div style="text-align:center"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/Sheryn-Regis-1.jpg" style="width:300px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><div style="text-align:center">Photo Credit to @sherynregis on Instagram</div>During her show at the Music Museum, she looked back on the beginnings of her career and revealed the truth of what was going on with her at that time. It can be recalled that Sheryn and Erik were both part of the singing competition’s first season. Sheryn was a strong contender, but she was bested by Erik as Grand Champion. “At that time, I really wanted to win. I needed money. Kakapanganak ko lang,” she recalled. The hotel where she and her then husband used to work had just closed, and she was worried about how to figure out their finances for her newborn. She put her hopes on the grand prize, only to miss out on it. “Paano na ‘yung anak ko? ‘Yung pamilya ko?”, she remembered thinking. She had hoped to get one million pesos, the prize allotted for the show’s winner. “Sana nakuha ko ‘yun, pero hindi e,” she said. While she still received a cash prize, the amount was very far from what she was aiming for. “Napakaliit ng consolation prize,” she recalled. “Honestly, sixteen thousand lang po ang nakuha ko noon.”Sheryn’s disappointment was clear to see when Erik’s name was announced as winner. “I really didn’t mean to react that way during the announcement back then,” she explained now, twenty years later. “I just couldn’t help it. Hindi ko mapigilan.”At that point, all she was focused on was that she wasn’t able to get the prize that she aimed and worked for. “Gusto ko lang ‘yung cash prize. Gusto ko lang talaga ‘yun,” she said.In a previous interview, Sheryn already clarified that her reaction wasn’t a reflection of any bad feelings towards Erik but more of a disappointment towards herself. “Ano bang ginawa mo Sheryn, bakit failure ka nanaman, loser ka na naman,” she berated herself then. “Ganoon ka-bitter ‘yung feeling ko for myself.”<div><a href="https://push.abs-cbn.com/2021/10/23/fresh-scoops/sheryn-regis-looks-back-on-losing-a-singing-compet-196493">READ: Sheryn Regis looks back on losing a singing competition: ‘Feeling ko pera na naging bato pa’</a></div>Sheryn was overwhelmed with so many emotions. At that time, she thought it was solely due to the competition. Little did she know that there was a much more serious reason behind it.“I was already drowning sa dami ng nararamdaman ko at that particular moment,” she admitted to her audience. “Later on, I was told na kaya pala lalo akong naging emosyonal because I was already experiencing postpartum depression.”According to the Mayo Clinic, “baby blues” characterized by mood swings, crying spells, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping are commonly experienced by new moms after childbirth. It can occur a few days after delivery until a couple of weeks after. However, these are some cases when this takes a more serious turn and turns into an intense and long-lasting form of depression. Postpartum depression is typically attributed to the changes in hormones, psychological adjustments, and fatigue. This may be a complication of childbirth and may include cause a mother to have difficulty bonding with her baby, experience restlessness, hopelessness, irritability, and feelings of worthlessness, among others. If left untreated, this may last for several months or even longer. A rare, but severe, form of this is postpartum psychosis which may even lead to life-threatening behaviors. During that time, Sheryn had no idea what postpartum depression was, which made it difficult to identify or even understand what she was going through immediately. “Hindi ko naman alam kung ano ‘yang depression na ‘yan. Gano’n pala ‘yun. ‘Yung halo-halong hindi ko maintindhan talaga,” she shared. “Lahat ng emotions nandoon, na hindi ko ma-control.”Towards the end of Sheryn’s confession, Erik walked onstageand headed over to hug Sheryn, proving that there truly is no bad blood between them.
