TWICE’s Jihyo makes solo debut with ‘Zone’

South Korean singer-songwriter Jihyo successfully made her solo debut with her first EP Zone last August 18. She is the second member of the girl group TWICE to become a solo artist.

Jihyo then revealed during the press conference for her album that she had over a year to prepare for her solo debut. Her agency, JYP Entertainment, gave her the freedom to choose the direction she wanted for her first-ever solo album.

“It was difficult to choose at first, but working on the songs, I eventually thought I wanted to make an album that could show new sides of myself as a vocalist. All the songs are of different genres and I tried to make my voice sound as different as I could for each of them,” she said.

The seven-track album offers a variety of genres that Jihyo challenged herself to do. Her title track, “Killin Me Good,” showcased a different side of the 26-year-old vocalist as she sang it with a low voice that resonated throughout the song––far from her usual high pitch in TWICE.

She personally chose the song as she wanted her solo debut to be something she can perform on stage––both in vocals and dance.

“I believed that, as a singer, I had to enjoy my performance first to give good energy and emotions to the people watching me. Many people recommended that I do a ballad for my first solo piece, but I wanted to dance,” she shared.

The South Korean superstar revealed that she has always seen herself as a member of a group rather than a solo artist as she wanted to be with her friends.

“I believe that everyone, whether an artist or not, has their own individual allures. It might seem ugly to some, but I believe it could appeal to others. I tried best to show myself as naturally as I could, and while some might think it’s cute and others, frankly, I hope that everyone could give their own interpretations as they feel,” she said.

Jihyo added that she is satisfied with her first release as a solo artist as she has successfully portrayed herself through the album.

“I’ve already achieved everything by putting out an album I’m satisfied with that portrays me as a solo singer. Rather than saying ‘please play it many times,’ I want to say ‘please enjoy,'” she added.

Jihyo debuted as a member of the global phenomenon girl group TWICE and is the main vocalist and the leader of the nine-member girl group.
