Singer-producer Jay R gets right into business preparing for his reunion concert “Back in Time” with Kyla on September 2 after flying back to the country last week along with his wife, Mica Javier.

During his recent presscon, the 42-year-old singer also shared why he decided to stay in the US for the past two years.

“The real reason we went back to LA was because my dad got sick. At that time, na tumawag sila sa akin, he only had a few months to live. But thank God he lived for two years after that. So, we were able to spend time with him," he shared.

"And because of that, medyo na-stuck kami sa LA. And us being artists na very proactive na laging may gustong gawin, we’re recording again, developing our relationships again with our friends sa LA and making new relationships,” he added.

While abroad, Jay R said he and his wife did not waste time pursuing international connections and trying to build a bigger career.

“So from there, it’s easier to get in the scene. You know that’s Hollywood, that’s where a lot of the music comes out of, even K-pop. K-pop is derived from Hollywood producers," she said.

"So, nandun na kami and we figured we might as well take advantage of this opportunity and it came natural kasi taga-LA din ako. I was born and raised in LA. There’s a language talaga we speak to locals sa LA and they get it, especially na meron kaming very good track record in the Philippines," he added.

"Nakikita sa social media namin 'yung mga achievements so ang dami ring gusto mag-collaborate sa amin and we’ve been going 100 miles an hour and we’re so excited to show the world what we’ve been working on,” he continued.

Getting married right at the start of the pandemic was also life-changing for Jay R as he also noticed how his music evolved with the changes in his life.

“Yes, most definitely becoming a husband has been part of my evolution, for sure. Siyempre in the beginning, 'yung concept ng mga kanta ko it’s about finding a girl and going out and partying, meron akong nakikitang a beautiful girl na gusto ko kausapin di ba?" he explained.

"But now that I’m a husband, it’s about stability and about showing that love for someone, and celebrating being faithful to someone. So may evolution talaga siya because I’m living that life now,” he added.

As he gets ready for his 20th anniversary in showbiz, Jay R says he has no problem being known as an RnB singer in the country.

“RnB stuck with me because of authenticity. Ito talaga 'yung hilig ko and the way I sing and the Philippines actually gave me the name ‘King of RnB.’ Hindi ako nagbigay nun. When I came out here sa Pilipinas, the fans gave me that name. So I embraced it," he remarked.

He went on: "And until now I’m very proud to be a pillar of RnB sa Pilipinas. So, pag nasa states ako, they ask me my profile and the first thing I tell them is , ‘Well you know, I’m the Philippines’ king of RnB!.’ (laughs) I’m very proud and I’m going to stick to that until the day I die."

Watch Jay R and Kyla in their one-night-only reunion concert, "Back in Time," on Saturday, September 2 at the New Frontier Theater in Cubao, Quezon City. Gates open at 7PM. Tickets are available at Ticketnet outlets.
