Joining the cast of director Adolf Alix Jr.’s newest film project Karnabal is Gina Alajar who says she is excited to shoot the unique project which aims to shoot the full-length 90-minute movie in just one continuous take.

The film stars EA Guzman as a blue-collar worker who decides that one day he wants to jump off a billboard along EDSA.

“It’s really challenging pero pag nagawa ng tama, pag nagawa ng maganda, if we’re successful in doing this, wow. And of course this would be really challenging for EA and I’m just so glad na merong kabataan na merong ganung foresight, na merong gustong gawin na kakaiba,” she said during Karnabal’s cast reveal event.

Playing the role of a reporter on her way to work when she stumbles upon the story, Gina shared what she thinks will be her biggest challenge in portraying the role. The 64-year-old actress also shared why she did not want to use any real-life reporter as a peg for the role.

“Hindi ko naman gusto maging caricature na kapag nakita nila ako, masasabi nila, ‘Ay, sino yan. Si ano yung ginagaya niya. Ay si ganun!’ I don’t want it to be that way naman. Kasi ako naman yung aarte. I just want it to be my original interpretation. I just want to thank them na na-cast kami dito kasi it’s a challenge for me also. Sabi ko nga, ‘Ma-me-memorize ko ba ang dialogue tapos may timing pa?’ Kasi mahirap pa eh. Kung sa akin magkamali, naku uulitin lahat from the top dahil sa pagkakamali ko? Nakakahiya yun hindi ba?

“So I think it’s a preparation of mind, body, and soul. Kailangan we’re prepared mentally, physically and emotionally. Imagine we’ll be under the sun for the whole time. Walang puwedeng magpayong, walang puwedeng sumilong. We’re just going to wait for our turn, for our cue. So we need to prepare for that,” she explained.

Working with fellow veteran actors Jaclyn Jose, Joel Saracho, and Ricky Davao (whom she recently starred with in Net 25 Films’ project Monday First Screening), Gina said she knew it is going to be a good project.

“Ako mas relaxed. Hindi ko kasi alam kung sinu-sino ang kasama except for EA. Because I believe and I have faith in them na magagawa nila yung trabaho nila. Na-le-lessen yung takot kasi kapag meron kang isang kasama diyan na hindi hindi magaling mag-memorya ng linya dun medyo kabado ka. So baka doon magsasabi na ako kay direk Adolf na, ‘Adolf, baka mahirapan tayo diyan ah. Baka kailangan palitan mo na yan.’ But Ricky is there, Jaclyn Jose, and then si Joel Saracho so the movie is in good hands and pati sa mga artista trusted actors and actresses.”

Gina further stressed how for an ambitious project like Karanbal, professionalism and dependability come into play.

“And sa totoo lang naman, hindi naman sa pagmamayabang, pero ipagyayabang ko na rin, na sa mga ganitong proyekto, you only get the trusted ones. Not necessarily the best, pero pag trusted the best yan. Pero kailangan yung maaasahan mo that can deliver the goods. Kailangan yung pupuwedeng maka-contribute dun sa pelikula. Challenge din sa amin ito kasi it’s the first time that we’re doing it like this. Kaya nga maganda yung pakiramdam kasi we’re part of it. Kasi hindi naman palaging may ganito. It’s a very difficult project so palagay ko hindi naman lahat mag-a-attempt gumawa nito,” she explained.

In her more than five decades-long career in the industry, Gina said Karnabal is proving to be one of her most unforgettable projects already.

“This is the first time na gagawin namin ito. Kung ano yung natutunan namin through the years, experiences namin sa pelikula, experience namin sa TV, lahat yun sama sama na para magawa namin yung dapat namin gawin. So kailangan preparado kami mind, body, and emotions. Kasi this will be very tiring for all of us. It’s like a two-hour play na lagi kang on your toes, ninenerbiyos ka, ganun. Kaya lang, in a play, pag nag-start ka na, curtain call na, start ka na. Dito pag nagkamali ka, start from the beginning. So that one hour and 30 minutes, it could really take the whole day. Kasi uulitin mo ulit yun yung buong one hour na yun. Yun yung challenge. But it’s a very good challenge. Ito yung mga magagandang problema,” she said.
