After a successful run earlier this year, PETA’s all-original Filipino musical Walang Aray, which is a reimagining of Severino Reyes’ classic zarzuela Walang Sugat, is set to return for a limited three-weekend run at the PETA Theater Center in Quezon City from October 6 to 22, 2023.

The witty musical, which was chosen as PETA’s comeback show, ended last February with a 41-show run with multiple sold-out shows.

The musical also received 21 citations from 14th Gawad Buhay Awards including Outstanding Book of a Musical, Outstanding Original Musical, Outstanding Original Score, Outstanding Musical Direction, Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Musical, Outstanding Stage Direction for a Musical, Outstanding Choreography, Outstanding Sound Design, and Outstanding Set Design.

Lead actor and choreographer Gio Gahol and Marynor Madamesila, together with Shaira Opsimar and Jon Abella will bring to life once again the roles of the star-crossed lovers Tenyong and Julia, which also earned them citations for the Female and Male Lead Performance in a Musical in the Gawad Buhay Awards.

Walang Aray’s returning ensemble cast includes Jarred Jaicten and Bene Manaois as Miguel, Kiki Baento as Monica, Carlon Matobato as Lucas, Norbs Portales, and Csai Habla as Don Tadeo, Neomi Gonzales as Doña Juana, and John Moran as Padre Alfaro. Joining them are the equally memorable ensemble members Donn Boco, Gerard Dy, Yeyin Dela Cruz, Ada Tayao, and Ayla Garcia, who all shine in their multiple roles.

During Walang Aray’s initial run this year, Star Magic’s Alexa Ilacad and KD Estrada made their stage debut as two of the lead stars. In a previous interview with PUSH, Alexa shares how she has fallen in love with theater.

“I’ve been enjoying everything, working with these amazing people who inspire me everyday that I am on this stage or watching on those chairs. So sabi ko, ‘This is the best decision that I made I think this year. I’m so happy’ At wala na akong ibang bukang bibig sa bahay o sa labas kundi ito. It has consumed my life. So I love it,” she shared. KDLex was part of the musical’s successful three-month run.

Walang Aray’s creative team includes award-winning playwright Rody Vera, together with young creatives including Vince Lim (composer, musical director, sound designer, and additional lyrics), Ian Segarra (director), Gio Gahol (choreographer), Julio Garcia (set designer), David Esguerra (lighting designer), Haps Constantino (sound designer), and JayLo Conanan (costume designer).
