Filipinos love infidelity themes in series and movies that take one’s emotions to peak melodrama levels. Often portrayed with dramatic scenes, intense acting, and sharp dialogue, these stories hit it big by playing on people’s heartstrings.It is quite refreshing then to witness Betrayal by British theater icon and Nobel Prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter. Instead of fiery confrontations and emotional waterworks, the play is a series of conversations, mostly calm and still, told in a chronologically-challenged manner as it exposes the breakdown (and the blooming) of the three main characters’ relationships.Repertory Philippines (REP) raises the curtain for its 87th season with the Manila premiere of Betrayal running until March 17, 2024 at the Carlos P. Though born in England, actors James Cooney’s and Vanessa White’s families are from Davao and James Bradwell’s from Naga City. My family is from Batangas. And we will mine our Filipino roots to re-tell this beautiful and complicated story.” They are joined by Manila-based actors and Philstage Gawad Buhay awardees Regina De Vera and Jef Flores.
