Ever since the announcement that she had officially made it as part of the cast of the Sandbox Collective’s new musical Little Shop of Horrors, actress Sue Ramirez admitted she has been both nervous and excited to venture into acting on stage for the first time.

“I’m in a musical! Can you believe it? I’m honored to be welcomed into the theater industry. Grabe sobrang bukas na bukas yung pagtanggap nila sa akin. They’re all willing to help me. Nakaalalay talaga yung mga castmates ko. Everybody who is part of this production, nararamdaman ko talaga yung alalay na yun sa akin. They’re really teaching me the ways of theater,” she told PUSH in an exclusive interview.

The 27-year-old actress said her interest in theater started even before Star Magic encouraged her to audition for the role of Audrey, the lead female character in the show.

“Bata pa lang ako, gusto ko na mag-theater. I started watching mga musical movies, like Mama Mia! was my favorite. So I would sing in front of the mirror when acting. So bata pa lang ako gusto ko na mag-theater. Wala lang talaga ako chance tapos nakakahiyang pumasok sa industriya na hindi ka aral na aral. Kasi ang pangit naman na gawin mo siyang training ground di ba while you’re working with mga veteran actors na talaga from theater. So medyo may pagho-hold back ako.

"This time nakita ko na mas open na yung doors nila for TV and movie actors coming into theater. I think Toff (De Venecia, the director) has contacts and humingi siya sa Star Magic kung sinong mga actors ang puwedeng mag-audition for Little Shop of Horrors. And walang hesitation sa akin, I said yes I really wanted to do it and audition. Let’s see na lang, kung hindi nila ako makitaan ng okay, hindi naman siguro nila ako kukunin. I really just wanted to try and eto na nga ako (laughs). I’m here doing our rehearsals.

"Sobra sobrang nag-e-enjoy kami dito. It’s a lot of work talaga. Madaming self-doubt na dumadating, especially if you’re working with veteran actors. You start to think, ‘Do I really belong here?'” she explained.

Looking back on the auditions, Sue revealed how nervous she was during the entire process.

“Nung auditions talaga, nanginginig yung tuhod ko. As in, I was like going to faint na sa sobrang kaba, But Reb Atadero, who did the audition with me, I was so grateful that he was my partner sa play na ito kasi grabe yung alalay niya sa akin. I’m sure lahat ng theater actors na makakabasa ng interview na ito, will back me up on this when I say na grabe si Reb (who plays her love interest in the show) mag-alaga and he's trying to push me pag nakikita niya na medyo disoriented na ako. Talagang pini-pep talk niya ako.

"Nakakapanghina talaga ng loob kasi siyempre ibang mundo yung ginagalawan mo tapos ayokong maramdaman ng mga kasama ko na ginagawa kong training ground yung profession nila. So it’s that pressure for me, yun yung pinakamabigat,” she explained.

Sue also shared how thankful she was for the support she has been getting from her co-stars Reb Atadero and Karylle (who alternates for the same role as Audrey).

“Love team kami dito ni Reb and ang alternates namin dito is si Karylle Tatlonghari lang naman. So grabe talaga yung pressure, parang feeling ko pasan ko ang mundo. But everybody’s so nice. They’re so welcoming and si ate Karylle has been helping me a lot. I take notes from her when she does her runs and ang dami ko ring natututunan, not only from her but sa iba din.

"So kailangan talaga nanunuod ka and focused ka kapag may ibang nag-pe-perform para nakiktia mo din what works. Kasi walang director na magsasabi sa iyo eh. Talagang magdedesisyon ka. Si Toff is very collaborative with us so he doesn’t really want to tell us what to do. He’ll ask, ‘What do you feel like doing? Let’s see if it works. If it doesn’t, let’s change it.’ Aalalayan ka lang niya,” she said.

Watch Sue make her stage debut in the Sandbox Collective musical Little Shop of Horrors starting July 6 to 28 at the Maybank Performing Arts Theater in BGC with Friday shows at 8 p.m. and weekend shows at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are now available at Ticketworld and @thesandboxco on Instagram.
