The filming for the sequel to the fantasy-comedy film Freaky Friday has commenced.

On Tuesday, June 25, Disney shared a clip and a snapshot of Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis on their first day on the set of the movie.

"The Colemans are back and coming to theaters in 2025! The sequel to Freaky Friday is now in production!" the entertainment company announced on Tuesday, June 25.

Fans online were quick to express their excitement about the sequel.

"My 2025 has just been made," one fan said.

"Movie of the year is coming," another fan wrote.

According to Variety, other cast members of the sequel are returning stars Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Lucille Soong, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. Meanwhile, Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan are the new cast members.

The first Freaky Friday film was released in 2003. The movie follows the story of a mother and daughter who magically switch bodies for a day.

Lindsay Lohan plays Anna Coleman, a rebellious teenager struggling with school, her band, and her relationship with her mother. Jamie Lee Curtis portrays Tess Coleman, Anna's mother, a successful therapist about to remarry, who has trouble understanding her daughter's behavior and interests.

The film was a hit and grossed more than $160 million worldwide and received positive reviews from critics. Jamie earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her role.

Back in November 2022, in an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Lindsay shared that she discussed the idea of a sequel for Freaky Friday with co-star Jamie Lee Curtis.

"We did speak about it. First of all let us just take the fact that I was on set filming at that time and Jamie Lee Curtis writes you and you just get excited and distracted immediately so I have to bring myself down to earth and be like, 'I'm on set, I have to focus,' and she said Freaky Friday 2 and I got more excited," she relayed.

Meanwhile, in an interview on The View, Jamie disclosed that she wrote a proposal to Disney about her idea for the sequel.

"Let me be the grandma! Let me be the old grandma who switches places. So then Lindsay gets to be the sexy grandma, who is still happy with Mark Harmon in all the ways you would be happy with Mark Harmon," Jamie stated in the interview.

She went on: "And simply, I would like to see Lindsay be the hot grandma, and I would like to see me try to deal with toddlers today. I want to be a helicopter parent in today's world, as an old lady."

The plot for the sequel to Freaky Friday has yet to be revealed.

Lindsay recently starred in the films Irish Wish and Falling for Christmas.

Meanwhile, Jamie recently starred in the Oscar-winning movie Everything Everywhere All at Once, where she bagged the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

"To all of the people who have supported the genre movies that I've made for all these years, the thousands and hundreds of thousands of people, we just won an Oscar together!" she said in her speech.
