Alfred Vargas reflects on film industry changes and celebrates FAMAS win

<p>Alfred Vargas, seasoned actor and producer, has witnessed the rapid transformation of the film industry over the years. </p><p>Recently named FAMAS best actor for his role in <em>Pieta </em>(he tied with Piolo Pascual who won for <em>Mallari</em>), Alfred shared his thoughts on the evolving landscape of movie distribution. Naabutan ko pa ‘yung panahon ng <em>&#x27;Bridal Shower&#x27;</em> (2004) at <em>&#x27;Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah&#x27;</em> (2006) na kahit number 3 or 4 or 5 ka sa film fest eh kumikita ka pa rin,” Alfred shared. </p><p>Despite these changes, he remains a firm believer in the power of storytelling. “Unfortunately, we have to face the reality na kapag narinig ng tao na, ‘Uy, mapapanood ko ‘yan sa Netflix,’ hindi na sila manonood sa sinehan. Ganun talaga eh. Basta ako, I still believe if you do a good film, people will watch it kahit saan pa ‘yan. Kapag gusto nila ‘yan, papanoorin nila ‘yan, pupuntahan ka nila sa sinehan,” he emphasized.</p><p>Alfred also announced that <em>Pieta</em> will be shown exclusively in SM Cinemas, particularly for those eager to see Nora Aunor. “Exclusive ito sa SM Cinemas. Lalo na sa mga gustong mapanood si Ms. Nora Aunor. Hindi muna mapapanood sa any streaming platform. Nakausap natin ang SM. <em>Pieta</em> will be shown exclusively in SM Cinemas at ito-tour natin ito,” he revealed. </p><p>He detailed that special screenings will begin in late June as a tribute to Nora Aunor&#x27;s recognition as a National Artist, with a nationwide tour of the film commencing in July.</p><p>Alfred praised the legendary actress for her contributions to his performance in <em>Pieta</em>. “Ang laki ng ginawa niya for me para magawa ko talaga ‘yung karakter ko na pinakamaganda. She never made me feel uncomfortable. Inalalayan niya rin ako sa blocking, sa eksena. Feeling ko, hindi ako mananalo ng award kung hindi dahil kay Ate Guy, at kay direk Gina Alajar na acting coach ko, at kay Ms. Jaclyn Jose,” he said.</p><p>While celebrating his FAMAS win, Alfred responded to comments suggesting that the FAMAS controversy overshadowed his achievement. </p><p>“For me, personally, hindi siya na-overshadow. I’m so honored na nanalo ako. May na-achieve tayo sa FAMAS. Na-recognize tayo sa ginawa natin sa &#x27;<em>Pieta</em>.&#x27; That night, ginawa kong unan itong trophy. Actually, hindi ako nakatulog sa sobrang happy. Super grateful talaga,” he said. Reflecting on his unexpected victory, he added, “Nung tinawag ‘yung pangalan ko, nagulat ako. I’m happy na ‘yung simple at maliit naming pelikula ay napansin. Pinaghirapan natin at proud tayo.”</p><p>In addition to his film career, Alfred highlighted his commitment to public service. “My vocation is really public service. Kung papipiliin ako, I will always choose public service,” he stated. Alfred revealed that he has no plans to produce films this year, focusing instead on his role as a public servant. “For now, my brother is doing a very good job as congressman.
