Afgan unveils his most personal work yet with new EP ‘Sonder’

<p style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left">Indonesian singer Afgan, known for his soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics, has released his most personal EP to date, <em>Sonder</em>. </p><div style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left"> </div><p style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left">In an exclusive interview, Afgan delved into the inspiration behind the EP, his collaborations, and the themes that define his latest project.</p><div style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left"> </div><p style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left">Afgan shared that the driving force behind <em>Sonder </em>was his desire to reveal more of his personal side to his fans. “I talk a lot about my personal struggles, my insecurities, basically life stuff that people don’t really know about me,” he said. </p><div style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left"> </div><p style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left">The EP features a blend of emotions, from deep introspection to fun, lighthearted moments, as exemplified in his track “Escape” featuring Jessi.</p><div style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left"> </div><p style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left">“Shallow Water”, the first single from the EP, delves into the complexities of relationships and past traumas. “It’s about traumas in the past and you’ve become insecure in a new relationship,” Afgan explained. </p><div style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left"> </div><p style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left">Another track, “Lonely Nights”, appreciates solitude as a time for self-reflection. “Sometimes I love being by myself, and right now I can appreciate loneliness,” he added.</p><div style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left"> </div><p style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left">Afgan collaborated with Jessi and thuy on <em>Sonder</em>, bringing diverse styles and experiences to the EP. His collaboration with Jessi blossomed from their friendship and mutual love for Bali, where they filmed the music video for &quot;Escape.&quot; </p><div style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left"> </div><p style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left">On the other hand, his connection with thuy was facilitated by their shared publicist. “She did her thing for that song and she sounded so good,” Afgan remarked, expressing his eagerness to meet thuy in person.</p><div style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left"> </div><p style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left">Tracks like &quot;Missing the Old Days&quot; reflect Afgan&#x27;s nostalgia for simpler times, contrasting the fast-paced modern life. &quot;Criminal&quot;, a collaboration with thuy, allowed Afgan to experiment with storytelling, creating a character vastly different from himself. “I like that dark twist in the lyrics. It’s basically a story we created, and I like [that] Criminal sounds dangerous,” he shared.</p><div style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left"> </div><p style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left">Reflecting on his career, Afgan acknowledged his growth not only as a performer but as a person. “I think I’ve grown so much not only as a performer or as a musician but as a human being as well,” he said. This personal evolution is evident in <em>Sonder</em>, where he embraces a more honest and open approach.</p><div style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left"> </div><p style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left">Looking ahead, Afgan is excited about exploring new genres and continuing his journey of authenticity in music. He also expressed a strong desire to collaborate with Filipino artists, emphasizing the importance of supporting the Asian music movement.</p><div style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left"> </div><p style="margin:0cm;line-height:115%;text-align:left">Afgan is currently on his Asia tour for <em>Sonder</em>, with shows in Seoul, Malaysia, Singapore, Jakarta, and Japan.
