An animated series of Midnight Sun, a novel from the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, is set to hit Netflix.

The streaming giant confirmed on Thursday, September 5, that the novel will be adapted into an animated series and is now in development.

Midnight Sun, released in 2020, is a companion to Stephenie Meyer's 2005 book Twilight. It retells the story from vampire Edward Cullen's point of view instead of human Bella Swan's.

Stephenie will be an executive producer for Midnight Sun alongside her Fickle Fish Films partner, Meghan Hibbett. Producers from Temple Hill Entertainment and Picturestart will also join the series.

The first three Twilight novels were previously adapted into movies which were Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn Part 1, and Breaking Dawn Part 2. The films starred Robert Pattinson as Edward and Kristen Stewart as Bella.

In an interview with Stephenie with Seventeen magazine in 2020, the author shared what encouraged her to publish Midnight Sun. Stephenie started writing the novel in 2008 but a leak online made her decide to halt writing.

"There were a variety of different pressures influencing me: the fans, my mother, the irritation of an unfinished story. Honestly, it was more of a project I felt I should do than one I wanted to do," she said.

The author added: "Writing isn’t always fun and easy. That being said, there was a lot of fulfillment in finally finishing the story, and there were some sections that were very exciting to write."

When asked how Midnight Sun differed from Twilight's narrative, Stephenie replied: "Midnight Sun has a darker tone because it comes from the perspective of someone who knows this romance is doomed before it starts."

She went on: "Bella is very hopeful. She is falling in love for the first time and she never admits to any real obstacles. Edward is also falling in love for the first time, but he is one hundred percent positive that this love story can only end in tragedy. He gets to be hopeful for something like three chapters out of thirty. So, only ten percent happiness versus ninety percent dread."
