Each pair of parents usually have their own way of running the household and rearing children.</p><p>In the Philippines, a recent study by Toluna revealed that 7 out of 10 parents tend to over-parent their children. These parents micromanage their children&#x27;s lives out of love as they cannot bear to watch them get hurt, experience failure, or make a mistake. But this style of parenting can bring negative <a href="http://smhp.psych.ucla.edu/pdfdocs/overparent.pdf">consequences</a> to children down the line. They may grow up ill-prepared for the challenges of adulthood, while parents experience high levels of anxiety, stress, and exhaustion in controlling all aspects of their children&#x27;s lives.</p><p>A possible alternative to this is called collaborative parenting, a style that <a href="https://www.parentingideas.com.au/blog/collaborative-parenting-leads-the-way-during-coronavirus-pandemic/">parenting educators</a> noticed worked quite well in a quarantine setting. This style is one way to help kids develop emotional resilience and learn life skills through co-creation as it gets kids to contribute to different household chores without expecting something in return. </p><p>Actress Dimples Romana and Lady&#x27;s Choice teamed up for a special series to show how Collaborative Parenting can be done through fun and easy co-creation moments. Here are some of the valuable lessons from the 4-episode Choice Parenting with Dimples and Alonzo.</p><div><strong>Smart Financing</strong></div><figure class="op-interactive"><iframe height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cYeDjYtOaCU?enablejsapi=1" width="560"></iframe></figure><div style="text-align:center"><em>Teach your kids how to be smart when it comes to the financial aspect of their lives.</em><br/> </div><p>It is common for kids to love getting new toys and it can sometimes be difficult for parents to say no when they ask. However, parents should not always give in to what their kids want. Dimples encountered the same scenario in this episode of Choice Parenting as Alonzo was insistent on getting a new toy he saw online. She saw this as a good opportunity to teach her son the importance of being wise with money and the need to work hard to get what he wants.</p><p>To teach kids smart financing, parents can think of ways on how they can earn and save money whenever they want a new toy. Just like how Dimples co-created a mini sandwich business with Alonzo using Lady&#x27;s Choice. Parents can also help their kids save money by giving them a piggy bank or savings jars. For older kids, parents can even help them start their own bank account.<br/> <br/>By instilling the lesson of smart financing, children can grow up without developing poor money-spending habits. It is important to teach them that most things do not come easily and that achieving or getting things comes with hard work. At the end of the day, parents do not want their kids to grow up spoiled.<br/> <br/><strong>Practicing Open Communication</strong></p><figure class="op-interactive"><iframe height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/O0Md8QnqCn4?enablejsapi=1" width="560"></iframe></figure><div style="text-align:center"><em>Teaching kids the value of open communication is one way to express how they truly feel.</em><br/> </div><p>In this episode of Choice Parenting, Alonzo unintentionally breaks his <em>Ate</em> Callie&#x27;s glasses, but he does not have the confidence to approach her and admit his mistakes. Here, Dimples shared how parents typically are quick to react when faced with the same situation but to promote open communication with kids, parents should first listen to what their child has to say and show mutual respect. </p><p>To encourage open communication with the family, parents can take the lead by sharing their own feelings and ideas with their kids before asking them how they feel. They can also practice good listening skills instead of giving immediate harsh reprimands when faced with incidents such as Alonzo breaking his sister&#x27;s glasses. <br/> <br/>Teaching children the importance of open communication allows them to express how they truly feel about different things in different situations. By promoting open communication in the household, concepts such as accountability and honesty will be easier for kids. When they know how to communicate their feelings, they can be more honest. Just like in this episode, Alonzo was impatient to eat lunch because he was hungry It is not unlikely for parents to encounter irritable children when they do not get their way, so they need to teach them the value of patience early on.</p><p>For this episode, Dimples shows parents that they can teach their kids the value of patience by letting them experience the fun of waiting. Involve kids in the process of making their favorite dishes, so they can better appreciate the result of their time and hard work. Co-creation activities like these teach kids that being patient is worth the wait as it comes with a reward. Explain the step-by-step process to the child and how rushing things will not accomplish anything. </p><p>Involving your kids in the preparation and process time allows them to better understand how most things happen through time, effort, and patience. In this episode, Alonzo exhibited some struggles with his homework and in opening a jar. Instead of doing all those things for him, Dimples supported Alonzo and encouraged him to ask for help whenever he encounters any difficulties. <br/> <br/>Parents should encourage their kids to ask for help, as well as practicing the value of humility by assuring them that asking questions is not a sign of weakness. It can also help if parents listen and avoid making their children feel judged. To encourage this, parents can respond positively and be as accommodating as possible whenever their child approaches for help. When they are struggling with things like homework, do not do it for them, go through the lesson together and help your child learn. <br/> <br/>Learning to ask for help opens room for improvement and good growth. It can promote teamwork and even create more bonding time.
