ANCXpert Picks: 13 superb wines from P1500 to P3K that will make you seem like an expert

<p>How much should you spend on a really good bottle of wine? Wine prices run the gamut from supermarket wines under P500 to sky-high figures above P50,000! But for those looking for truly quality bottles at good value, then the “magic” price usually falls somewhere between P1,500 to P3,000. Not cheap, but not way out of budget either.</p><p>With that price range in mind, we uncorked, poured, swirled, and sampled the following 13 labels we found from three of our favorite wine shops, which all happen to line Pasong Tamo Extension in Makati. This wine shop also happens to offer <em>jamón ibérico</em> and a range of premium imported meats. <em>G/F Narra Building, 2276 Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati, (02) 880-0619, www.artisan.com.ph</em></p><h3> </h3><h3>Deux Montille Montagny Premier Cru Les Coères 2011, P2,922</h3><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/ancx/food-n-drink/2019/21/2wine.jpg"/></figure></div><p>This excellent Burgundy comes at a really good price. Situated near Chablis, this white can best be described as citrusy with a mineral character, perfect to drink with light dishes like salad and seafood.</p><h3> </h3><h3>Rodney Strong Chardonnay Sonoma County 2015, P1,250</h3><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/ancx/food-n-drink/2019/21/3wine.jpg"/></figure></div><p>This classic American Chardonnay is both oaky and fruity, boasting a 90-point rating from <em>Wine Spectactor</em>. We couldn’t stop drinking this aboard a recent business class flight.</p><h3> </h3><h3>Château Puy Blanquet Saint Émilion Grand Cru 2007, P1,850</h3><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/ancx/food-n-drink/2019/21/4wine.jpg"/></figure></div><p>This underrated 2007 vintage features mainly Merlot grapes, and is perfect to drink today. This light Bordeaux pairs nicely with chicken and pasta.</p><h3> </h3><h3>Château La Croix Saint Estèphe 2015, P1,900</h3><p>This bold, classic Saint Estèphe offers velvety tannins and balance, best paired with meat and cheese. This 2015 Bordeaux can be enjoyed as early as today, just make sure to open the bottle 30 minutes before serving.</p><h3> </h3><h3>Casanova di Neri Rosso di Montalcino 2012, P2,010</h3><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/ancx/food-n-drink/2019/21/5wine.jpg"/></figure></div><p>The winery’s 2012 Brunello di Montalcino was named one of 2018’s top 10 wines in the world by <em>Wine Spectator</em>. Its sibling, the Rosso di Montalcino, is a classic Sangiovese that offers a great tasting alternative at a much lower price, and can be savored with Italian food like pasta, pizza, porchetta, as well as lamb, pork, and veal.</p><div> </div><h3>PREMIUM WINE EXCHANGE</h3><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/ancx/food-n-drink/2019/21/6wine.jpg"/></figure></div><p>Christine or Aisha are usually on hand to help select wines for you, and even volunteer a pour of their featured labels for you to sample. <em>G/F Alegria Alta Building, 2294 Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City, (02) 840-5319, www.pwxchange.com.ph</em></p><h3> </h3><h3>Calera Chardonnay Central Coast 2015, P1,200</h3><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/ancx/food-n-drink/2019/21/7wine.jpg"/></figure></div><p>While famous for its Pinot Noir, Calera has its own refreshing take on California Chardonnay with this flavorful 2015 vintage offering fresh citrus and mineral notes that lead to a long, delightful finish.</p><h3> </h3><h3>La Rioja Alta Viña Ardanza Reserva 2008, P2,200</h3><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/ancx/food-n-drink/2019/21/8wine.jpg"/></figure></div><p>This special edition Rioja red is perfect with tapas or <em>pintxos</em>, perhaps some <em>jamón ibérico</em> and Manchego cheese, featuring refined tannins and a soft finish.</p><h3> </h3><h3>CVNE Imperial Reserva Rioja 2014, P2,500</h3><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/ancx/food-n-drink/2019/21/9wine.jpg"/></figure></div><p>One of the great labels from CVNE, it’s an elegant example of a classic Rioja, made with mostly Tempranillo (and a touch of Graciano, Mazuela, and Garnacha), perfect with meat, fatty fish, and cured cheeses.</p><h3> </h3><h3>Giuseppe Mascarello Barbera d’Alba Piedmont 2015, P2,400</h3><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/ancx/food-n-drink/2019/21/wine10.jpg"/></figure></div><p>This is one of those great Barolos made with Nebbiolo grapes from the landmark Monprivato vineyard, to produce an intense red with complex tannic notes perfect with heavy pastas and meat dishes.</p><h3> </h3><h3>Crossbarn by Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2015, P3,500</h3><p>This bold and full-bodied California Cab is actually quite balanced with soft tannins, and can be uncorked and enjoyed now, preferably with a good steak.</p><div> </div><h3>TERRY’S</h3><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/ancx/food-n-drink/2019/21/wine11.jpg"/></figure></div><p>If you’re lucky to catch owner and esteemed oenologist Juan Carlos de Terry at his gourmet store, he’ll be more than happy to personally help you with your wine picks. This affordable Palacios Priorat is medium bodied, drinkable now, and can be enjoyed with light chicken dishes.</p><h3> </h3><h3>Château des Laurets Puisseguin Saint-Émilion 2014, P2,130</h3><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/ancx/food-n-drink/2019/21/wine13.jpg"/></figure></div><p>This Rothschild-owned wine is a classic Saint Émilion, made with mostly Merlot grapes, and at a very good price for a Bordeaux red.</p><h3> </h3><h3>Protos Crianza Ribera del Duero 2015, P1,645</h3><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/ancx/food-n-drink/2019/21/wine14.jpg"/></figure></div><p>This legendary winery helped put Ribera del Duero on the global wine map. Given the Protos reputation, this Crianza is superbly priced for a taste of an iconic label.
