<p>If you’re looking for an easy-to-make cocktail at home, look no further than the Aperol Spritz. It may be just the right drink to keep your cool literally and figuratively while still under the #worldslongestlockdown. </p><div class="embed-wrap">With low-alcohol drinks trending worldwide, the Aperol Spritz is beginning to gain quite a loyal following in Manila as the perfect aperitif or pre-meal drink. This summery cocktail won’t overwhelm your tongue, making it great to have on hand during an extra slow day at home or while attending a Zoom drinking session with friends.</div><p>The history of the Aperol Spritz dates back to the Napoleonic wars of 1805, when a portion of Northern Italy was under Austrian rule. Soldiers added a “spritz” or literally a splash of water into the Italian wines they were drinking to make them less acidic in taste. The water later evolved to soda or fizzy water, and the wine to a combination of Aperol and Prosecco, an Italian sparkling wine.</p><div class="embed-wrap">The Aperol brand was launched at the Padua International Fair in 1919, seven years after two Italian brothers, Luigi and Silvio Barbieri, inherited their father’s liquor company and set out to create something different. They deviated from the usual standard-strength spirit or liquor everyone else was distilling at that time to come up with a bright orange, low-alcohol <em>aperitivo</em> or aperitif with a distinct bittersweet taste. Their secret recipe is still used to this date. </div><p>The name Aperol is derived from the French “<em>aperitif</em>,” a term generally used to describe light, pre-dinner drinks meant to stimulate the appetite, but not weigh down the palate nor get you drunk. That’s exactly the kind of drink that Aperol was designed to be.</p><p>In just five minutes, you can easily prepare an Aperol Spritz at home using three main ingredients—Aperol, Prosecco, and sparkling or soda water—and with no need for any special bar tools. You can use measuring cups or spoons in lieu of a jigger or a shot glass to measure the liquids. This zero-intimidation drink just requires you to dump the ingredients in a large wine glass or tumbler, add loads of ice, then garnish with a slice of orange, and you’re good to go.</p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/ancx/food-n-drink/2020/13/aperol3.jpg"/><figcaption>Three spritzes at Mistral in Raffles Makati, including an Aperol Spritz on the left</figcaption></figure></div><div> </div><h3>Aperol Spritz</h3><p>Serves 1              </p><p>60 ml Aperol</p><p>60 ml Prosecco</p><p>20 ml soda water or sparkling water</p><p>orange slice</p><p>1. Pour all ingredients into an Aperol spritz glass or a large wine glass.</p><p>2. Add ice and garnish with an orange slice. </p><p>Of course, feel free to experiment and add other ingredients to the mix or substitute any ingredient.
