It was indeed another thrilling and action-packed week (February 19 to February 23) for the avid viewers of FPJ’s Batang Quiapo as we didn’t only witness the nail-biting riot between the camps of Tanggol (Coco Martin) and Bong (Vandolph) inside the correctional, but also the entrance of the new characters to watch out for in the second year of this well-loved primetime series.

The previous week commenced with the bloody face-off between David (McCoy de Leon) and Severino (Dindo Arroyo) in one of the alleys of San Dimas, wherein the latter was killed by the former after he attempted to expose to Ramon (Christopher de Leon) the real identity of David. But before Severino could even do it, he was fatally shot by David multiple times that led to his death.

Rigor (John Estrada) immediately responded to the crime scene after hearing the gunshot. But David managed to flee upon hearing the voice of his father and ran into Edwin (Ping Medina), who was then on his way to their house to check on his parents. David continued to run away, leaving Edwin startled. Rigor spotted him and commanded him to surrender, but instead of obeying him, he and his group exchanged shots with the police officer and ran off.

Since they were the ones who he saw near the scene, Rigor told his colleagues PLT Luis Jacobe (Victor Silayan) and PLT Mario Samonte (Jorel Ramirez) that Edwin and his group were the possible suspects since they escaped from prison and Severino assailed his parents Marcing (Pen Medina) and Nita (Susan Africa) earlier that night.

That same night in another part of Quiapo, as he was still mourning the demise of his beloved Yolly (Deborah Sun), Lucio (Ronnie Lazaro) confronted Primo (Lito Lapid) and their comrades. The henchmen of Augustus (Julio Diaz) led by Mulong (Val Iglesias) suddenly arrived at Yolly’s wake to finish them off. Just when they thought that they would lose because they were outnumbered, the neighbors and friends of Yolly at the tenement united to help Primo and his friends. In the end, it was Lucio who was able to corner Mulong and gun him down.

While everyone in their household were already troubled by the various events happening simultaneously that night, Santino (Ronwaldo Martin) was having a kilig moment with Annika (Dexie Diaz) after her birthday party. Aside from treating his bruise and happily accepting his gift that is a boxing glove keychain, Annika also mustered the courage to tell him that she likes him. However, perhaps due to the intimidation that he felt after observing the kind of life Annika has and speaking to her parents, all that Santino was able to utter was “thank you,” which got her so upset.

Next day, as everyone in the correctional was having fun during the Prison Awareness Week celebration, Bong and his group carried out their plan of finishing off its administrators and Tanggol and his friends, which resulted in a riot. They were able to shoot down Chief Espinas (Jaclyn Jose), Jail Warden Balatucan (Robert Seña), and Jail Lt. Macasantos (Lao Rodriguez), as well as Celso (Soliman Cruz) who saved Tanggol. They also tried to kill Tanggol and his friends but to no avail as the latter were able to protect themselves and fight them.

Bong also attempted to rape Bubbles (Ivana Alawi), but Tanggol came just right in time to save her. A bloody fisticuff ensued between them, which resulted in the death of Bong after being beaten hard and shot on the head at point-blank by Tanggol.

Prior to it, Macasantos welcomed two new inmates, namely, Marcelo Macaraig (Nonie Buencamino) and Dante Ramirez (Dan Alvaro), who were both charged of homicide and illegal possession of firearms. They were brought to the same cell as Tanggol and friends.

After receiving a call from the correctional, Rigor and his men immediately went there upon the order of Colonel Suarez (King Gutierrez). He spotted Tanggol and castigated him, assuming that it was him who started the riot, but Enteng (Jojit Lorenzo) and Bubbles defended Tanggol and told Rigor that it was purely because of self-defense. Rigor later on told Mando (Allan Paule) that Bubbles seems familiar to him as she looked like the woman who ambushed the Red Phoenix. This heightens his suspicion that Tanggol can sneak out of the facility to commit crimes outside.

Meanwhile, even though she was still initially hesitant to leave Tess (Cherry Pie Picache), Tindeng (Charo Santos) was finally persuaded to do so by Noy (Lou Veloso) during their heartwarming conversation. As they looked for a place to stay in and a new opportunity outside Quiapo, they decided to turn to Señora Bettina Caballero (Tessie Tomas) who offered them help after rescuing her from the muggers who attacked her. They applied for jobs at her expansive mansion and she hired them as caretakers of their horses.

Apparently, Señora Bettina’s family is one of the Montenegros’ affiliates as her husband Señor Facundo (Jaime Fabregas) is business partners with them, based on his phone conversation with Ramon (Christopher de Leon).

The previous of FPJ’s Batang Quiapo was indeed an exciting one for its avid viewers. Just on the first episode of the week, we immediately found ourselves shocked by the altercation between David and Severino, which resulted in the death of the latter. Then in the next episodes, we got to witness the bloody and horrible riot inside the correctional, which led to the demise of Bong and his group after they carried out their plan of finishing off the facility facilitators and Tanggol and his friends. Those scenes might be hard to watch, but the way those were executed were truly impressive.

Of course, netizens were annoyed again at David for being so rude to his girlfriend Camille and for acting as if he’s “holier than thou” in front of Rigor. We also felt the same towards Rigor immediately pinning the blame at Tanggol for what happened inside the correctional without even investigating. Besides, he and Lena’s (Mercedes Cabral) acting skills in denying their illicit affair is vexing, too.

Furthermore, we’re delighted, as well, that Tindeng finally came into her senses after she agreed to Noy’s suggestion for them to leave the Dimaguiba residence and let Marites realize the mistake she’s been committing for not believing in their claims that Rigor is indeed having an extramarital affair.

We also found Noy’s advice to Tindeng, saying, “Siyempre bilang ina, lahat ng mabuti gusto mo sa anak mo. Pero hindi siya matututo hangga’t hindi siya nadadapa at nasasaktan. Minsan, sa sobrang pagprotekta mo sa kanya, hindi niya na maididilat ang mga mata niya sa katotohanan.”

A lot of characters might have already bidden adieu from the series, but netizens were thrilled about the arrivals of new characters played by some of the promising and biggest stars in the local entertainment scene. Leading the roster is Tessie Tomas, who already made her entrance a few weeks ago as Señora Bettina. Jaime Fabregas is also introduced as Señor Facundo, along with Nonie Buencamino as Marcelo Macaraig (who we thought was already dead) and Dan Alvaro as Dante Ramirez. As the name of his character was already mentioned, fans of Elijah Canlas couldn’t help but be excited to finally see him in the next episodes.
