Just on the very first week of 2024, FPJ’s Batang Quiapo immediately appalled us with an unexpected and huge plot twist that we definitely didn’t see coming – the death of a major character that totally stirred its viewers.

As Amanda (Lorna Tolentino) continues to blame Yolly (Deborah Sun) for the tragic demise of her beloved parents after the henchmen of Augustus (Julio Diaz) were able to track them down at their hideout and attacked them. A heated confrontation ensued between the two women, which prompted Lucio (Ronnie Lazaro) to decide that they would part ways with the group, even before Primo (Lito Lapid) agreed to Amanda not to include them in their operation. At the same time, he doesn’t want their lives to be endangered again due to their loyalty to Primo, who seemed to not care about their welfare.

Upon confirming that Edwin (Ping Medina) is indeed in prison, Nita (Susan Africa) and Marcing (Pen Medina) decided to sell the gold jewelries gifted to them by Mokang (Lovi Poe). It was also when they asked the Dimaguibas for their rental payment when Marites (Cherry Pie Picache) started to suspect that Tindeng (Charo Santos) and Noy (Lou Veloso) were hiding something important from her.

Marites only got to confirm it after learning that Myrna (Myrna Castillo) received a large sum from her son Enteng (Jojit Lorenzo), which can be recalled was handed to her by Bubbles (Ivana Alawi). She confronted them about it, saying that Rigor’s (John Estrada) suspicion that Tanggol (Coco Martin) might have escaped from jail could be true.

Meanwhile, Tanggol was running for his life along with Mokang and Bubbles (Ivana Alawi) after Ramon (Christopher de Leon) and his minions were able to follow them at the motel where they stayed for the night. They then boarded a train going to Blumentritt as they tried to run away from the enemies. Unfortunately, they were able to still follow them, causing a commotion at the train station. The police immediately responded to the scene, which resulted to a nail-biting gunfight between them and Ramon’s platoon. Bubbles and Tanggol then courageously fought the enemies and succeeded in killing some of them.

Mokang attempted to persuade Tanggol to just leave her so that Ramon and his men would stop chasing them and he and Bubbles could still run away safely from the enemies. However, Tanggol was still persistent in confronting them and taking Mokang away as he and Bubbles were about to flee. Ramon and Tanggol came face-to-face again, yet the former was not able to recognize the face of the latter. An intense shootout ensued between Tanggol and Ramon’s group, with Mokang helping him at the same time.

Unbeknown to Ramon, his sister Olga (Irma Adlawan) and his two right-hands were also at the scene in her pursuit of being the one to kill Tanggol as her way of avenging the death of her son Gregg (RK Bagatsing). Mokang caught her pointing her gun at Tanggol, so she ran behind him and caught the bullet that was supposedly for him. She got fatally shot on the forehead, which immediately claimed her life.

Bubbles told Tanggol to just leave Mokang’s body there, but he refused as he wanted to be the one to send her to her final resting place. They also couldn’t bring her to the hospital because the authorities would surely interrogate and capture them. Thus, they just brought her lifeless body to a nearby church for some sort of blessing and gave her a decent burial. He held the dried sampaguita that he gave to Mokang when he was still wooing her and kissed her for the last time.

Aside from Tanggol, his younger brother Santino (Ronwaldo Martin) also has a battle of his own as Coach Gary (Levi Ignacio) and the two boxing trainers agreed to put him and Lawrence (Paolo Gumabao) to a deciding match to determine who between them would be Kamao gym’s representative for the upcoming invitational cup. Besides, the two dashing lads are also rivaling to win the heart of the apple of their eyes, Annika (Dexie Diaz).

Fervent viewers of FPJ’s Batang Quiapo were indeed in for shocking surprise on the very first week of 2024 as we just witnessed what could be considered as one of the biggest plot twists in the continuously unfolding narrative of the well-loved action drama series.

This indeed brought mixed reactions among netizens, who got to witness the shocking and tragic death of Mokang, as well as bewilderment as nobody saw it coming. Certainly, everyone is wondering why it happened since they were looking forward for her and Tanggol to have a second chance and they are going to be each other’s end game. But it won’t happen anymore, much to the dismay of Tanggol-Mokang shippers, who expressed how much they will miss her presence on the show. At the same time, there were some who found Lovi Poe’s stint on the show quite bitin, as she wasn’t able to show off her skills in doing action scenes yet. Nonetheless, whatever her reason would be in bidding farewell to the show, we still hope the best on her next endeavors, may it be in her career or her personal life.

Of course, we got touched and kilig while watching the last moments of Mokang and Tanggol inside the train, yet our hearts broke as well for Bubbles, who just watched as they went lovey-dovey in front of her. We might have seen that vulnerable part of her, but Bubbles proved that she’s still the feisty girl that we all adored as she helped Tanggol in fighting their enemies. Ivana once again shone this week as she astounded us with her skills in handling guns and in executing her stunts flawlessly.

With the death of Mokang, Coco did an incredible job in making us feel the pain and agony of Tanggol, especially during his emotional scenes – when he held Mokang in his arms immediately after she got shot, when he questioned God for claiming the life of the sole woman that he loved with all his heart the most, and when he caressed her for one last time before completely burying her.

As memories of Tanggol and Mokang flashed into our eyes, avid viewers arguably couldn’t help but be sad as she’s one of the characters whom we loved so much, and let us reiterate, many are hoping for them to have a happy ending.
