The challenges Ryza Cenon face as young Irma Adlawan in FPJ’s Batang Quiapo

Two years after giving birth, Ryza Cenon was back on primetime via <a href="https://ent.abs-cbn.com/batangquiapo" target="_blank">FPJ’s Batang Quiapo</a> where she played a pivotal role as the young Olga (later played by Irma Adlawan). In this episode of Kapamilya Chat, she related her experience taking part in the show’s historic pilot episode.Taking us back to her first day on set, Ryza mentioned she immediately asked Coco Martin about Olga’s backstory since they weren’t given a detailed script and they relied mostly on Coco’s impromptu instructions. Though familiar with Coco’s no-script directing style, which he also used when they were co-stars in <a href="https://ent.abs-cbn.com/angprobinsyano" target="_blank">FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano</a>, Ryza admitted spontaneity is a challenge for actors.“Mahirap din kasi ‘yung nangangapa ka na hindi mo alam. Hindi ako sanay na pagdating ko doon, hindi ko alam kung anong gagawin ko, hindi ko alam kung sino ako,” she said. For someone who uses method acting, Ryza needs to fully get to know her character.Nevertheless, she can adapt to the changes. And it also pushed her to be on her toes and raise her level of performance at par with the veteran cast members. “Kailangan magaling ka magkabisado ng lines… As artista, kailangan prepared ka lagi… Kailangan marunong ka din magtanong.”As part of her preparations, she studied Irma’s acting style, which is all about expressing emotions through facial reactions, especially the eyes. “So, ako, ‘pag may eksena ako, pipikit ako iniisip ko ‘yung reaction niya. Para masaniban ako ni Ms. Irma.”She added, “Nakakahiya na hindi mo ibigay ‘yung one hundred o one thousand one percent mo. Kung ‘okay lang’ ‘yung ibigay mo, nakakahiya.”She was already done taping when it suddenly dawned on her that she should’ve asked Irma for pointers. “Super mali ko &#x27;yun!” So, the next time she plays another actress’ younger counterpart, she’d make sure to talk to the actress first.The <a href="https://ent.abs-cbn.com/batangquiapo/videos/marites-binawi-ang-kanyang-anak-kay-olga-341820" target="_blank">‘Anak ko ‘yan!’ scene</a> that showed Olga’s attempt to abduct Marites (Miles Ocampo/Cherry Pie Picache)’s newborn trended online, thanks to the intense emotions that enveloped that moment. Before the take, Ryza detailed to Miles a mother’s real-life birthing experience – how intense the pain feels and how a mother would react when threatened to lose her child.“Kasi, siyempre, feeling ko makakatulong ‘yun sa pag-motivate kay Miles. Ang hirap ng eksenang ‘yun kasi first take namin tapos ganu’n ‘yung eksena. Sabi ko, ‘Nakakaawa naman si Miles. Ang bigat-bigat ng eksena.’”What exactly did she tell Miles before the take? “Sabi ko, ‘Kapag kukunin na ‘yung anak mo, para kang tigre diyan. Wala ka nang mararamdaman. Tatayo ka talaga diyan. Kahit kapapanganak mo pa lang diyan, hindi pa natatahi ‘yung ano mo, tatayo ka talaga kasi anak mo ‘yun, eh. Adrenaline ‘yun. Hindi mo mararamdaman. Tatakbo ka talaga tapos kukunin mo ‘yung anak mo sa akin.’”Ryza chalks up their success to effective collaboration, “Kaya siya naging maganda dahil nagkaroon kami ng teamwork lahat. Walang iwanan, talagang tulungan Kami.”When asked about working with Coco in this project, she revealed that Coco remains as passionate and creative as he was in <a href="https://ent.abs-cbn.com/angprobinsyano" target="_blank">FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano</a>. He’s still the same Coco who is hands-on and “maalaga” to his talents. Sometimes, he would even say, “Ulitin natin kasi double chin ka,” which Ryza appreciates, “Iba talaga pag artista na tapos direktor kasi alam nila kung ano nafe-feel ng artista, kung anong gustong makita ng mga artista sa screen.”She has nothing but good words for the captain of their ship, in awe of Coco’s unwavering commitment to this project, “Parang hindi siya napapagod.” He juggles everything but never complains or shows negative attitude. In reality, he’s just quiet and focused on his multiple tasks, and he’s so humble that he downplays compliments.“Kahit sabihin mo ‘yung totoo sa kanya na, ‘Direk, ang galing mo,’ mahihiya siya sa’yo. Tapos tahimik lang siya kasi nagfo-focus siya sa kung ano pang next niyang gagawin,” she revealed about the beloved Primetime King.Ryza divulged that viewers will see her again in the upcoming episodes since there are more revelations about Olga’s character.
