MANILA – Filipinos spend more time on social media that anyone else in the world, according to a global study, solidifying the country’s reputation as an online engagement hub.Filipinos spent an average 4.17 hours daily on social media in 2016, according to the <a href="http://wearesocial.com/sg/blog/2017/01/digital-in-2017-global-overview">Digital Global Overview</a> by We Are Social and Hootsuite released Wednesday.Brazil came in second (3.45 hours), followed by Argentina (3.32 hours), Mexico (3.32 hours), UAE (3.24 hours), Malaysia (3.19 hours), Indonesia (3.16 hours), Egypt (3.1 hours), Turkey (3.01 hours) and Saudi Arabia (2.55 hours).Fifty-eight percent of the Philippine population are active social media users on a monthly basis, the 15th highest penetration rate in the world, the study said.Facebook has the most number of active monthly users with over one billion, followed by Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, YpuTube, QQ, WeChat, QZone, Tumblr, Instagram, Twitter, Baidu, Skype, Snapchat and Sina Weibo, the study showed.China added the most number of social media users last year, followed by India, Indonesia, the US, Brazil and Mexico. The Philippines placed seventh, with 12 million new users, up 25 percent, and above the global average of 21 percent, the study said.There are nearly 2.8 billion active social media users globally, of which 2.5 billion can access their accounts on mobile devices, the study said. Mobile phones account for half of global traffic compared to 45 percent for laptops and desktops and 5 percent for tablets.Of the world’s 7.5 billion population, 3.8 billion use the internet, it said.The Global Web Index is based on quarterly data from 37 countries, which include 200,000 interviews, according to We Are Social.
