MANILA - Acer's approach to cloud computing is different from that of other tech companies, the company's honorary chairman and founder Stan Shih said Thursday.

Shih told ANC's The Boss said that while other companies want to house user's data in their own cloud servers and data centers, Acer wants users to "keep" their data.

"We will do the service. We are not looking for data. Data is owned by (the) customer, data is not owned by us," Shih said.

He said this was the idea behind "Build Your Own Cloud", Acer's suite of apps and services which lets users access and synchronize photos, music and other files on PCs and mobile devices.

Unlike other cloud services such as iCloud or Google Drive, Acer saves all the data directly to the user’s PC, which acts like a private, mini data center.

Acer’s Shih believes this "user-centric" strategy versus the "customer-centric" strategy of other hardware vendors will allow the Taiwanese tech giant to better compete.

Besides implementing a different cloud strategy, Acer is also betting big on high-end desktops and laptops dedicated to gaming.

Acer said Thursday it expected revenues to "triple" in the Philippines, where a fast-growing community of computer gamers is helping sustain demand for its Predator line of gaming computers.
