<figure class="op-interactive"><div style="padding-top:66.375%"><div id="IVS_ABS_Body_Video_1_Container"> <ivs-player id="IVS_ABS_Body_Video_1" data-ivs-spid="3001339" data-ivs-key="e8c22c015ca9eafa76f1e3edfa03c603" data-ivs-vid="1455092" data-ivs-floating="1"></ivs-player> <script src="https://player.ivideosmart.com/ivsplayer/v4/dist/js/iframe-parent.js"></script> <script src="https://player.ivideosmart.com/ivsplayer/v4/dist/js/loader.js"></script> </div></div></figure><p>MANILA - The image of a man being dragged out of a United Express jet in the US went viral on Tuesday, highlighting the need for passengers to be aware of their rights in case their flight is overbooked, a Filipino aviation official said.</p><p>Under the Philippines’ air passenger bill of rights, carriers must “do everything to negotiate” and get excess passengers off the flight, said Eldric Peredo, chief of the air operating rights division of the Civil Aeronautics Board.</p><p>Overbooking is a “normal practice” which airlines base on the travel history of a specific route, which includes no-shows at the airport, Peredo told ANC.</p><div><strong>Here is what can happen in case of an overbooked flight, according to Peredo:</strong></div><p>- Airlines will negotiate with some passengers to convince them to give up their seat voluntarily. “If that takes sky high prices, I don’t know, its up to them,” Peredo said.</p><p>- Full service carriers can offer more to their passengers. “We should not expect too much of low cost carriers. Their offer will not be equal for every passenger, the passenger can negotiate what is good for him and her,” he said.</p><p>- Passengers can negotiate for hotel accommodations, booking in later flights or alternatives if air travel is not possible.</p><p>- In case no one agrees to leave, airlines will go through their “priority list,” wherein passengers with connecting flights get preference over “leisure travelers,” he said.</p><p>- Airline employees and those travelling for free should be the “first to be bumped,” Peredo said.
