<figure class="op-social"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameBorder="0" height="350" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7aej5tn_GDw" width="510"></iframe></figure>MANILA (UPDATE) - The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) lifted the power supply red alert in Luzon at 3:01 p.m. on Friday and downgraded it to yellow alert status.The Luzon grid was placed on &quot;red alert&quot; status from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. as peak demand was expected to reach an all-time high of 9,746 megawatts (MW).Rotating brownouts had been projected on Friday afternoon due to thin energy reserves, downed power plants, and spike in demand due to the summer heat.Both Visayas and Mindanao grids, on the other hand, are still on red alert from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. to 10 p.m., respectively.A red alert status is raised when there is severe power deficiency, which means the reserves are below the minimum level set by the regulator. The thinnest net reserves for Luzon was projected at 2 p.m. with only 156 megawatts.A negative 62 MW of net reserves was projected for Visayas in the evening, and negative net reserves for almost the whole the day in some parts of Mindanao.The Department of Energy (DOE) said Kalayaan units 3 and 4 with 180 MW each were still offline.Four power plants were still out, including the Pagbilao and Botoca plants.Meanwhile, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) tapped Interruptible Load Program (ILP) members to activate 100 MW. The ILP helps reduce the overall demand for power.As of posting, no brownouts have been reported in Meralco service areas.Zambales I Electric Cooperative (ZAMECO) announced that some parts of Zambales were experiencing power outages in Castillejos, San Marcelino, Subi, Cabangan, San Antonio, San Felipe, and San Narciso.Based on Meralco&#x27;s data, demand grows a little more than 3 percent year-on-year. So far, the demand has doubled to 6 to 7 percent increase this year.Historically, the highest demand is recorded in May.The DOE said the high demand drains power reserves and pushes power plants to their limits.According to Energy Undersecretary Mylene Capongcol, discussions on how to encourage demand response is on the way.As for the May 9 elections, the DOE assured the public that a task force is working with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to make sure that there will be no power outages on election day.Since the elections will be held on a holiday, DOE said demand will be slower and additional plants are coming on stream such as the Pagbilao plant.
