MANILA - Metro Manila's train systems will resume on reduced capacity once the lockdown or enhanced community quarantine ends on May 15, the Department of Transportation said Wednesday.

Each LRT-1 train set can ferry 158 passengers or 12 percent of its capacity per trip, 160 passengers or 10 percent per train set for LRT-2 and 153 passengers or 13 percent for MRT-3 while the PNR train can carry about 148 passengers or 20 percent of its capacity, DOTr Usec. for Railways Timothy John Batan said.

The numbers were based on simulations of passengers maintaining a 1-meter distance, the DOTr said. Reducing capacity will ensure physical distancing advised by the country's coronavirus task force, it said.

“We have to remember that this protocol aims to prevent the virus from spreading. We want to put an end to this health crisis, as we want to help our frontliners, our essential workers in going to their places of destination during GCQ,” Batan said.

Passengers without masks, those with COVID-19 symptoms or with temperature of 37.8 degrees Celsius or higher, senior citizens, those aged 0 to 20 and pregnant women will not be allowed to enter train stations, the DOTr said.

The DOTr said the LRT-1 serve about 500,000 passengers daily, the LRT-2 line with 200,000 and the MRT-3 line with about 300,000 daily prior to the coronavirus pandemic.
