MANILA - Amazon's cloud unit on Monday launched its workshop model in the Philippines to help students and educators harness their skills in cloud computing.

Around 800 fresh graduates, graduating students and 200 teachers will undergo lectures, hands-on activities and a "hackathon"during the 4-day Amazon Web Services "Siklab Pilipinas 2018."

The Philippines was chosen to host the event because of its strong economic growth, young workforce and its ability to service a global audience as showcased by the business process outsourcing industry, said AWS regional managing director Peter Moore.

"The Philippines represents a large population of young people and we want to invest in the future starting with all these brilliant young people. A large young population is a very important dynamic of for us, that’s why we focus on education," Moore said.

The technologies showcased are similar to the ones used by Netflix and AirBnB, said Vincent Quah, AWS regional head for education, research and not for profit in the Asia Pacific public sector.

The AWS offers cloud computing services such as storage, email management and data analytics.

Investments in the cloud are expected to double to $243 billion in 2020 from $115 billion in 2016 resulting in millions of jobs, said Quah, citing a report.

Moore said this skills training model could be replicated in a global scale if proven to be effective.

Amazon Web Services, together with companies and members of the AWS Partner Network (APN), such Coins.Ph, Globe, Jollibee, Max's Group, Meralco, Robinsons Retail Holdings and Unionbank, will hold a job fair on June 7 for cloud-related job opportunities.
