MANILA - PLDT Inc said Monday it was contesting the labor department order to grant regular status to nearly 9,000 workers and pay P78.6 million in benefits.

The telecommunications giant said it filed an appeal last July 17, citing the department's "disregard" of evidence and "erroneous computation" of the alleged unpaid benefits.

"In accordance with the rules of procedure for these types of cases, the filing of the appeal stays the execution of any aspect of the
order, for the duration of the appeal," the company said.

Shares of PLDT were down 0.59 percent to 1,690 on Monday.
