Gardenia boss is on a roll with bread empire

MANILA - Gardenia Bakeries Philippines Inc. President Simplicio Umali built the country's largest bread empire on plain hard work, punching in long hours at work to inspire his employees to do the same.

The man behind fluffy bread loaves that are a fixture in supermarkets across the country believes in hiring the right people who share his vision for the company.

"And I work with people. And it's the people that would be able to bring us towards that objective," he said.

"I will show them the strategies on what needs to be done and we will work together to achieve that objective," he added.

Umali has earmarked P1 billion for Gardenia's first ever plant in Mindanao. He expects P5 billion in revenues this year from P4 billion last year.
